Michelle Henderson has been appointed as the new general manager of New Zealand Aluminium Smelters (NZAS), marking a return to the Tiwai Point operation where she first started her career. Her appointment brings a mix of operational experience, governance expertise and deep regional ties at a time when the smelter is preparing for its next phase.

She will succeed Matt Black, who has been acting general manager since May. Henderson takes over on January 28, with Black continuing in the interim.
Henderson began at Tiwai as a graduate engineer before moving through several frontline leadership roles, later taking on senior responsibilities across Rio Tinto’s global network. She went on to serve as chief operating officer at PowerNet and has held a range of high-profile directorships, including at Meridian Energy, South Port, New Zealand Post and previously Fulton Hogan.

she said, “I am really excited to return to Rio Tinto and Tiwai, and to be working with the great team at NZAS as we enter the next chapter for this iconic New Zealand business.
“The smelter plays a vital role in Southland’s economy, and I look forward to connecting with our many partners and stakeholders in Southland and New Zealand. Low carbon aluminium has never been more important globally, and Tiwai’s role in helping provide the metal the world needs for the energy transition is something all New Zealanders can be proud of.”
Alongside her industry experience, Henderson has been active in community and governance circles. She is a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Directors NZ and was recognised as Leader of the Year by the NZ Safeguard Business Leaders Health and Safety Forum in 2019. Her volunteer involvement in Southland, including as a former trustee for Youthline Southland, underscores her longstanding links to the region.
Rio Tinto Aluminium Pacific Operations managing director Armando Torres said Henderson brings the right blend of operational knowledge and community connection to guide NZAS through its next stage.
“Her leadership will help us continue to provide value for our global customers, our team, our partners in Southland and the local community,’’ he said.
“Her appointment also reinforces Rio Tinto’s commitment to Southland and its people, ensuring the smelter continues to play a positive role in the region’s economy and community, including ensuring we meet all our environmental commitments.”
