Last month also, the aluminium behemoth announced a series of green initiatives dedicated to preserving biodiversity across its operational regions in Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

Strategic expansion beyond initial scope

The original biodiversity project at Vedanta's Jharsuguda smelter has advanced into a complete sustainability framework. The company, producing over half of India’s aluminium – 2.42 million tonnes in FY25, has an enormous impact on the environment. With this partnership, it now targets three critical areas: a) achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050, b) water positivity by 2030, and c) maintaining no net loss of biodiversity.

Reflecting on the partnership with PwC, Rajiv Kumar, Chief Executive Officer, Vedanta Aluminium, expressed, “At Vedanta Aluminium, our ‘Transforming for Good’ philosophy is the cornerstone of our commitment to sustainability, inclusivity, and meaningful community impact. This collaboration with PwC exemplifies our unwavering dedication to driving sustainable growth and championing environmental stewardship. Anchored in robust ESG principles, we are actively working towards carbon neutrality by 2050 and supporting India’s Net Zero vision for 2070. By addressing critical ecological challenges, improving operational efficiencies, and placing communities at the heart of our efforts, we aim to transform the global aluminium industry. Together, we are forging a path to a more sustainable planet and redefining what responsible business truly means.”

Action plans of the collaboration

Under the terms of this collaboration, PwC India will support the execution of a comprehensive decarbonisation roadmap aligned with Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Standards, while focusing on reducing water consumption with the goal of achieving water positivity by 2030, developing biodiversity management plans, and assessing the feasibility of adopting the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

A different environmental approach

Vedanta's sustainability credentials are already remarkable—they recently ranked 2nd internationally in S&P's Corporate Sustainability Assessment of aluminium companies in 2024. The company has an annual output of exactly 2.42 million tonnes of the metal. This constitutes over half of India's aluminium production.

Industry Insights: This deal puts Vedanta ahead of its competitors in terms of sustainable aluminium production, especially as buyers globally increasingly demand low-carbon materials.

Broader impact alignment

According to the official press release, the initiative directly supports a number of UN Sustainable Development Goals, including Clean Water and Sanitation (Goal 6), Climate Action (Goal 13), and Life on Land (Goal 15), demonstrating how industrial sustainability can, in part, contribute to broader environmental and sustainability goals around the world.
