In order to do away with the criticism regarding its coffee pods adding to the environmental waste and to educate its customers regarding coffee capsule recycling, Nespresso has joined hands with New Zealand Post. The company hopes to create awareness about its recycling program and reach out to those who live outside of the main centres.
Consumers can now drop their used aluminium capsulesinto any PostShop, with the help of a specially-designed recycling bag in more than 270 locations across New Zealand.
The aluminium made coffee capsules are not only infinitely recyclable but the aluminium also maintains the fresh aroma of the coffee.
The collected capsules are carried to a specialist recycling plant where aluminium is separated from the used coffee grounds using specialized machines. The coffee grounds are used for making compost and the recovered aluminium is supplied to aluminium industry to manufacture new products.
“Unlike some other portioned coffee products, our coffee capsules are made from 100% recyclable aluminium,” said John Ciaglia, Nespresso New Zealand’s new Country Manager.
“The challenge we face is that there are some products that New Zealand’s kerbside recycling collection systems cannot accept, which is why since 2011 – when we opened our first Boutique in New Zealand - we have operated a dedicated recycling program. Since then, we have been continuously looking for ways to make it easier for our consumers to recycle, as their participation is essential to make our recycling efforts a success,” he added. 
He also specified that the recycling bag has been specifically designed so that they can be carried within the areas of New Zealand Post’s national network and this is a significant step to enable Nespresso’s consumers to participate in its recycling program.
Any customer can buy the post-paid bags at any Nespresso Boutique, order them online or avail them by calling customer care of Nespresso. The recycling bag can carry up to 130 used aluminium coffee capsules and costs just $1.50. The good news is that the return postage is paid by Nespresso regardless of any areas.
“New Zealand Post is pleased to be working with Nespresso to help make recycling Nespresso capsules even easier for Kiwis,” said Dawn Baggaley, Corporate Sustainability Manager at New Zealand Post.
“NZ Post is always seeking to provide sustainability solutions to customers, and this new innovative solution, which leverages our extensive national network of PostShops will allow Nespresso consumers to recycle in a more convenient way,” he added.

This collaboration is a part of Nespresso’s series of recycling programs. Besides, NZ Post recycling program, Nespresso also offers two already existing recycling options for coffee capsule recycling. Nespresso allows customers to drop their used aluminium capsules at all five Nespresso Boutiques across New Zealand and other 100 drop locations in various florists and garden centers.
Nespresso promotes sustainability and the company’s sustainability strategy covers goals related to coffee sourcing, aluminium and capsule recycling, and climate and works across the entire value chain.
