In a significant push to the Central government’s ambitious plan to switch to electro-mobility by 2030, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has initiated a process to set up and open electric vehicle charging stations for the public in various places in Delhi.
The civic agency has already installed 25 charging stations at multiple locations across Lutyens’ Delhi. The charging stations are set up at CP, Gole Market, Jor Bagh, Sarojini Nagar Market and Yashwant Place. These charging stations will be open to the public by the first week of March. These 25 stations will cater to the electric cars manufactured in India.
This is for the first time that a civic agency has established e-vehicle charging stations for the public use in an Indian city. NDMC had signed an MoU with Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) in 2018 for the implementation of the charging stations.
According to NDMC chairperson Naresh Kumar, EESL had outsourced a company to establish the stations and install charging points as per the ministry of power guidelines.
According to EESL, currently about 370 charging points have already been set up in Delhi and the city is running 153 electric vehicles. A number of issues are yet to be handled towards the implementation of EVs. Charging stations and range of the cars will play an important role, along with the registration processes. The government has specified a basic range of 130 Km, and according to the Managing Director of EESL, the cars delivered have already fared better than that specification.
