The growing use of aluminium screwcaps in wine have been driven by rise in outdoor events such as festivals and concerts and growing popularity of home barbecue parties. The various benefits of aluminium closures like easy to open and close, easy to transport and store and no fear of spilling make it a preferred choice among consumers and wine makers.
In the European market, use of aluminium closures in wine has been growing since 2010 with the growing consumption of non-vintage wines. The market share for bottled still wine in aluminium closure stood at 30% in 2016 and is on an upward curve.
Aluminium closures are also popular because of their organoleptic advantages as there is no chance of cork taint; absolute quality consistency from bottle to bottle; it is easy to store in any position and one can make out if the bottle has been tampered with.
Aluminium closures also offer endless decorative possibilities for the brand. Aluminium closures are a more sustainable option as they prevent wastage of wine caused due to cork closures. Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) studies also show the advantage. So aluminium closures help reduce food waste and increase overall resource efficiency.
Finally, recovering and recycling of aluminium from closures is convenient and very common in Europe and with aluminium being fully recyclable it turns out to be one of the most sustainable beverage packaging materials.
