MECL begins ground exploration for bauxite in Kutch

EDITED BY : 2MINS READ

Mineral Exploration & Consultancy Limited (MECL) has lately started with exploratory drilling for bauxite and other minerals in the Dhrang Block of Kutch District, Gujarat. This initiative is part of the Baghewala Project, which is also supported by the National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET) and is aimed at strengthening India’s mineral mapping and resource development efforts.

The exploration is a crucial move to figure out Kutch’s potential in bauxite reserves, which might support aluminium production in the country. Alongside this, the exploration will also examine traces of other minerals found in the same belt, helping geologists build a fuller picture of the area’s overall mineral profile and long-term potential.

Scientific exploration to support future developments

According to the reports submitted by the MECL officials, the drilling and sampling programme will align with geological standards. Data collected from the exploration will help estimate resource volumes, which will further assist in future investment plans in the state’s mineral sector. The exploration is also expected to support policies that promote sustainability and eco-friendly mineral development.

Building up a strong base of domestic resources

This project is a part of the extended effort to incorporate advanced scientific exploration through NMET-funded initiatives nationally. These programmes are instrumental in safeguarding long-term resource security, reducing imports, and reinforcing industrial self-sufficiency. According to MECL, these efforts are aligned with the Government of India’s vision for an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).

MECL’s legacy in mineral exploration

Established in 1972, MECL is one of the leading public sector undertakings (PSUs) under the Ministry of Mines. Over the decades, MECL has played a key role in the detailed exploration of 1,700 projects covering a wide range of minerals, such as bauxite, copper, gold and other base metals. MECL has always pioneered innovative and scientific exploration by leveraging modern drilling techniques and geological consultancy to drive sustainable growth within India’s mining and natural resource sectors.
