EDITED BY : SARNALI CHAKRABORTY 2MINS READ

McLaren, the world-renowned supercar maker, has made its mark in India by introducing the much-anticipated Artura hybrid electric sports car. The McLaren Artura is the first vehicle to use the McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA), developed exclusively for hybrid purposes.

This ground-breaking platform combines a carbon-fibre tub with aluminium crash beams and an aluminium rear subframe for structural robustness and weight reduction. The Artura PHEV is powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine with 585 horsepower and a rear-mounted electric motor with 95 hp and 225 Nm of torque.

McLaren Artura marks its debut in India, featuring aluminium crash beams and MCLA

In 2022, the transportation sector's aluminium consumption was estimated at 25.9 million tonnes. In 2023, demand is expected to reach 26.3 million tonnes. Furthermore, aluminium is one of the top materials of choice for EVs, whose market has grown by a factor of ten in recent years. Many downstream firms have already invested in battery casing and foil manufacturing facilities.

The Artura can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds and attain a peak speed of 330 km/h. A 7.4 kWh battery also allows for an electric-only range of up to 31 km and a peak speed of 130 kph. The battery can be charged from 0 to 80 per cent in 2.5 hours and may also use engine power depending on the driving mode chosen.

Sustainability in the global aluminium industry

Artura is a lightweight powerhouse with a kerb weight of 1,498kg and a dry weight of 1,395kg. The Artura has McLaren's characteristic design language, including headlight housing resembling the company emblem and a prominent air intake behind the doors.
