Malaysia’s aluminium scrap imports from US witness a drop of 1.8% in Q4 2020; Full-year imports stand 12% higher

Malaysia’s aluminium scrap import from the United States recorded a decrease of 7,900 tonnes or 17.83 per cent in December 2020 to stand at 36,400 tonnes, found the US Geological Survey’s latest data. In November 2020, the import volume stood almost flat at 44,300 tonnes compared to 44,800 tonnes in the previous month.

In the entire December quarter (Q4), Malaysia imported 125,500 tonnes of aluminium scrap from the US, which reflected a downfall of 2,300 tonnes or 1.8 per cent from 127,800 tonnes in the September quarter (Q3).

On a year-on-year basis, Malaysia’s aluminium scrap import in December 2020 stood 3,900 tonnes or 12 per cent higher than 32,500 tonnes.

Imports in the full year totalled 418,000 tonnes, up by 44.14 per cent from 290,000 tonnes in 2019.

The United States total aluminium scrap exports in December 2020 stood at 156,000 tonnes, down by 10.86 per cent month-on-month from 175,000 tonnes but up by 11.43 per cent on year from 140,000 tonnes.

The United States full-year aluminium scrap exports amounted to 1.85 million tonnes in 2020, reflecting a slight dip of 0.54 per cent from 1.86 million tonnes in 2019.

Total aluminium exports (including aluminium crude metal and alloys and aluminium plates, sheets and bars) from the US in 2020 totalled 2.72 million tonnes, down by 8.11 per cent from 2.96 million tonnes in the previous year.
