LME aluminium registered a slight increase on Monday; SHFE moves upward supported by falling inventory

EDITED BY : BEETHIKA BISWAS 2MINS READ

The US dollar extended decline and hit the lowest in nearly five months as a lack of detail about the preliminary US-China trade deal appeared to fuel the market doubts. The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of other currencies, slipped 0.16% and ended at 97.04. LME base metals mostly increased while the SHFE complex traded mixed. LME aluminium gained 0.65%. SHFE aluminium lost 0.11%.

Three-month LME aluminium regained losses from the early session, hitting a high of US$1,784 per tonne and finished 0.65% higher on the day at US$1,776 per tonne, with investors cutting their short position. LME aluminium is seen trading at US$1,750-1,800 per tonne today.

LME

As on December 16, Monday, LME aluminium cash (bid) price stood at US$ 1762.50 per tonne, LME official settlement price stands at US$ 1763 per tonne; 3-months bid price stands at US$ 1770 per tonne, 3-months offer price is US$ 1771per tonne; Dec 20 bid price stands at US$ 1828 per tonne, and Dec 20 offer price stands at US$ 1833 per tonne.

The LME aluminium opening stock increased again to 1403075 tonnes. Live Warrants totalled at 1309000 tonnes, and Cancelled Warrants were 94075 tonnes.

LME aluminium 3-months Asian Reference Price is hovering at US$ 1768 per tonne.

SHFE Aluminium Price Trend

Benchmark aluminium price for SHFE (Shanghai Future Exchange) dropped to US$ 1994 per tonne on Tuesday, December 17, 2019.

The most traded SHFE 2002 contract recovered from an intraday low of RMB 13,875 per tonne to close marginally higher at RMB 13,915 per tonne, as a decline in aluminium inventories over the weekend pointed to continued robustness in consumption. The SHFE 2002 contract fell for the second consecutive day with a loss of 0.07%, ending at RMB 13,905 per tonne on Monday night. But the recent strong purchase demand will offer some confidence in longs, likely keeping the contract between RMB 13,850-14,000  per tonne today. Slow deliveries to social warehouses will extend the decline in inventories in the short term, offering support to prices.
