The Spanish company Latem Aluminum has disclosed that it will invest €238 million in the Villandagos Del Páramo (León) and Villabrázaro (Zamora) plants and the outcome of it will create 660 direct jobs. Macario Fernández, Executive President of Latem Aluminum, explained in a telematics press conference together with the Minister of Employment and Industry, Ana Carlota Amigo: “The company is dedicated to producing green aluminium from scrap, which already has a plant in Villadangos del Páramo, where it will invest €100 million.”
In the Villabrázaro industrial estate, the production will commence during the H2 2023 and has an area of 300,000 square meters, while €138 million will be invested.
The investments will be followed by the creation of 660 qualified jobs of which 110 will be in the industrial estate of the province of León, and 550 in that of the province of Zamora. Besides the direct jobs, another 2000 indirect jobs will be created.
The Minister of Employment and Industry said: “The consideration of a priority industrial project will mean the streamlining of administrative procedures and the support of the Board to opt for state and European aid that have been launched in the face of the economic crisis caused by the pandemic of the coronavirus.”
Macario Fernández confirmed that the project initiated to take shape in 2018, before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The project is based in two areas with special needs for industrialization and business settlement and has assured that the production of green aluminium can support the competitiveness of other sectors, such as the automotive industry, the food industry and construction.
The president of Latem Aluminum has indicated: “The Company is in ‘talks’ with Renault Spain, with factories in Valladolid and Palencia, to reach an agreement on the supply of aluminium, either liquid or in ingots.
Macario Fernández added: “The Villadangos and Villabrázaro plants will have a low environmental impact, since they will use hydrogen, mixed with natural gas, as fuel for the fusion of aluminium and for the ordinary consumption of the facilities, which will mean less emission to the atmosphere than in similar processes.”
Latem Aluminum at their Villadangos plant expects to produce 20,000 tonnes of ingots from scrap this year.
