Kolkata Metro Railway has completed the aluminium third rail upgrade across the underground section of its Blue Line, replacing the older steel-based traction system that had been in use for more than four decades.
{alcircleadd}The upgrade is part of the metro’s broader infrastructure modernisation programme aimed at improving train frequency, operational efficiency and energy performance.
The underground stretch covered under the project includes sections from Noapara to Dum Dum and from Belgachia to Mahanayak Uttam Kumar station.
According to the metro authority, the earlier steel third rail system, manufactured by Steel Authority of India Limited, had been supplying power to metro trains since the early years of Kolkata Metro operations.
However, the system had gradually become less efficient with changing technology and increasing focus on energy-efficient infrastructure. The Ministry of Railways had earlier decided in 2012 that all new Kolkata Metro corridors would adopt aluminium third rail systems instead of steel.
Metro officials said aluminium offers significantly higher electrical conductivity compared to steel, which helps reduce voltage loss and improves energy efficiency. According to the statement, aluminium has electrical conductivity of around 38 million siemens per metre, compared to around 6 million siemens per metre for steel.
Officials said this would help trains accelerate faster and support the long-term goal of reducing train headway to around 150 seconds in future operations. The metro authority also noted that lower resistance in aluminium would reduce heat generation inside tunnels, helping lower the load on air-conditioning systems.
Apart from operational improvements, the project is also expected to bring environmental benefits. Kolkata Metro estimates that the aluminium third rail system could reduce carbon emissions by nearly 50,000 tonnes over its operational life.
The upgrade is also part of a wider plan to introduce advanced signalling systems and support higher-frequency metro services on India’s first metro corridor.
