
According to the aluminium trading data, Japan ranked as the fourth largest aluminium importing country in 2017 after the United State, Germany, and Netherlands, accounting for 8.3 percent of the world’s total share of aluminium imports. The world total aluminium imports in the same year had totalled at US$176.2 billion.

{alcircleadd}The global export-import data found that in 2016 and 2017, Japan had imported a total amount of 2.5 million tonnes and 2.8 million tonnes of aluminium including alloy and non-alloy, respectively. This shows the import volume grew by almost 12 per cent in 2017. Well, it does not stop there because according to the prediction by the international export-import data, Japan would likely import more this year, totalling at 3 million tonnes, 20 per cent up from 2016 and 7 per cent up from 2017.

Alongside, the import cost is expected to grow as well, from US$ 4375 million in 2016 and US$ 5660 million in 2017, to US$ 6004 million in 2018. This means, this year is forecast to see a year-on-year surge in Japan’s import value by 37 per cent from 2016 and 6 per cent from 2017.

As per the data, Russia is expected to account for the maximum supply of aluminium to Japan this year, delivering 653,678 tonnes in total, followed by Australia and China. Australia is predicted to supply 448,425 tonnes while China 408,089 tonnes. In contrast to this, Russia in 2016 and 2017 had accounted for 622,459 tonnes and 525,315 tonnes of aluminium import to Japan; while Australia and China 397,711 tonnes and 398,642 tonnes, and 382,236 tonnes and 348,269 tonnes in the respective years.
