Deputy USTR Jeffrey Gerrish said India’s recent retaliatory act against the US decision to impose tariffs on imported aluminium and steel was not appropriate.

Mr. Gerrish opposed India’s retaliation by claiming that US’ tariffs on imported aluminium and steel were not a safeguard measure. Therefore, according to him, India’s retaliation held no ground.
On Thursday, July 12, he said while addressing a Washington audience at the first Annual Leadership Summit of US India Strategic and Partnership Forum, “We were disappointed with the fact that India actually has imposed retaliatory measures actually it's not imposed them yet but announced retaliatory measures.”
"They (India) are approaching this as a safeguard metric that we have imposed. On that basis, they've determined that they have a basis to impose retaliatory measures,” Gerrish said.
He also added in his speech “We know how to do a safeguard measure. So there's no basis at all to retaliate against us.”
On June 21, India declared that it would impose retaliatory tariffs against 30 US products worth of US$240 million from August 4, to counter Trump administration’s move to unilaterally hike duties on Indian aluminium and steel exports. On June 13, it notified the World Trade Organisation about its plan.
The tariffs could have come into effect on an immediate basis but India wished to give some more time to the US keeping in mind the upcoming negotiations for a trade package between the two countries.
