The Indian metal sector has experienced notable fluctuations in stock performance over recent weeks, with key players like NALCO, Vedanta Aluminium and Hindalco showing mixed trends across different timeframes. A closer look at their stock price movements reveals underlying market sentiments and evolving dynamics within the sector.

Week-on-week analysis

When the market opened on July 22, 2025, NALCO's stock was priced at INR 196.47 (USD 2.35) and closed marginally lower at INR 196.45 (USD 2.35), indicating stable performance. However, by July 25, the stock touched a high of INR 199.35 (USD 2.39) before retreating to close at INR 193.50 (USD 2.31), marking a 2.93 per cent decline. The downward trend continued and as the market closed on July 28, the share price had further declined to INR 187.29 (USD 2.24), reflecting a 3.2 per cent drop.

Month-on-month analysis

On June 30, 2025, the firm's share price opened at INR 192.70 (USD 2.30). A notable dip followed on July 9, with the price falling to INR 186.23 (USD 2.23), showing a decline of 3.35 per cent. The stock then rebounded, reaching a peak of INR 198.90 (USD 2.39) on July 24. However, the upward momentum was short-lived, as the price dropped to INR 187.29 (USD 2.24) by July 28, indicating a 5.83 per cent downturn and signalling a renewed downward trend.

Year-to-date analysis

At the beginning of this year, the company's share price stood at INR 214.13 (USD 2.56) on January 1. The highest price was witnessed on January 2, when the price further moved up to INR 216.55 (USD 2.59), showing a rise of 1.13 per cent in a single day. The lowest share price of the year was seen on April 11, where the price stood at INR 143.22 (USD 1.71). The year-to-date share price declined by 12.53 per cent.

Year-on-year analysis

On July 29, 2024, NALCO's share price was recorded at INR 191.68 (USD 2.29). In comparison, the share price on July 28, 2025, stood at INR 187.29 (USD 2.24), reflecting a year-on-year decline of 2.29 per cent.

Comparison with Vedanta Aluminium

Compared to NALCO, Vedanta, a key player in India's aluminium sector, also experienced a similar downward trend. On July 23, 2025, Vedanta's share price stood at INR 452 (USD 5.40) and INR 437.50 (USD 5.23) on July 28, marking a week-on-week decline of 3.20 per cent.

On a month-on-month basis, Vedanta's share price was INR 460.85 (USD 5.51) on June 30, 2025, and declined to INR 437.50 (USD 5.23) by July 28, a 5.06 per cent drop. In comparison, NALCO also followed a similar downward trajectory over the same period.

On a year-to-date basis, Vedanta's share price was INR 444.45 (USD 5.31) on January 1, 2025, and declined to INR 437.50 (USD 5.23) by July 28, a marginal drop of 1.56 per cent. In comparison, NALCO recorded a steeper year-to-date decline, indicating relatively weaker stock performance.

On a year-on-year basis, Vedanta's share price was INR 448.95 (USD 5.37) on July 29, 2024, and declined to INR 437.50 (USD 5.23) in 2025, a drop of 2.55 per cent. If compared with NALCO, both organisations have faced a similar year-on-year downward trend. 

Comparison with Hindalco

Hindalco, known as the world's largest aluminium rolling and recycling company and a prominent player in speciality alumina, also witnessed a fluctuating trend in its share price. 

On July 23, 2025, Hindalco's share price was INR 692.60 (USD 8.28) and declined to INR 686 (USD 8.21) by July 28, a week-on-week dip of 0.95 per cent. In comparison, NALCO recorded a steeper decline over the same period, indicating a comparatively sharper short-term correction.

On a month-on-month basis, Hindalco's share price stood at INR 692.85 on June 30, 2025 and declined to INR 686 by July 28, reflecting a 0.98 per cent drop. In comparison, NALCO has a higher downward trajectory over the same period.

On a year-to-date basis, the share price increased from INR 592.95 (USD 7.09) on January 1 to INR 686 (USD 8.21) by July 28, a 15.69 per cent rise. In comparison, NALCO recorded a steeper year-to-date decline, indicating relatively weaker stock performance.

On July 29, 2024, Hindalco's price stood at INR 666.85 (USD 7.97), increasing by 2.87 per cent year-on-year. If compared with NALCO, both organisations have a year-on-year downward trend.
