Hydro has agreed to a three-year deal with Shell Energy to assist in decarbonising its UK operations. The arrangement is for an annual supply of 56 GWh of electricity and 144 GWh of gas to Hydro's UK operations. By implementing this contractual agreement, Hydro successfully reduced its Scope 2 emissions in the UK, resulting in a noteworthy reduction of about 11,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Hydro will get renewable energy from the Rhyl Flats wind farm in Wales as part of the agreement. The power has a Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin certification. The wind farm is located 8 kilometres off the coast of Llandudno and is the second biggest wind farm in Wales, with 90 MWh of installed capacity and 25 turbines.
"We are always looking for new and innovative solutions to decarbonise our own operations. This is considered a board-level priority, so when it came to finding the perfect energy partner for our UK operations, we were looking for a long-term partner that could support our transition to net zero. Shell Energy demonstrated extensive understanding of our business, our sector and our ambitious decarbonisation roadmap," said Lars Lysbakken, Energy Portfolio Manager at Hydro.
Hydro is trying to become a more sustainable firm, and its Hydro Recycled Aluminium and Hydro Low-Carbon Aluminium brands currently provide some of the most environmentally friendly aluminium goods available. Hydro can maintain the carbon footprint of Hydro Recycled Aluminium at 2.3 kilo CO2 per kilo aluminium by recycling aluminium components from old windows, automobile parts, and other sources of post-consumer trash. This is less than one-third of Europe's average carbon footprint for aluminium use. The efforts to minimise own emissions via the use of renewable energy and to enhance own manufacturing processes to make them more environmentally friendly complement the product offering.
"Rather than a transactional agreement, we see our contracts as long-term strategic partnerships, an opportunity to accelerate our customers' journeys to net zero. In the case of Hydro, we were able to offer a solution that is perfectly aligned to its Operational Sustainability Roadmap. We are looking forward to working in close partnership with the team in the long-term to offer our knowledge, guidance and support," added Greg Kavanagh, Head of Industrial & Commercial Sales at Shell Energy.
Hydro is working hard to speed up its green transition, with the ultimate goal of being net-zero by 2050, thanks to a dedication to environmental best practices. Hydro's Operational Sustainability Roadmap establishes challenging objectives for lowering carbon, energy, waste, and water, with a goal of zero waste to landfill.
Electric forklifts, automated cooling towers, energy harvesting, and a ground-breaking air leak programme are all scheduled to be implemented by 2025. The Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin from the Rhyl Flats Offshore Wind Farm was vital to the arrangement. Hydro is dedicated to consuming less energy, and the operations must now be totally fuelled by renewable electricity.
