Honda is celebrating 25 years of hybrid-electric vehicle sales in North America, a milestone that began with the introduction of the revolutionary ‘Honda Insight’.

As the first Honda hybrid-electric vehicle sold in Canada, the Insight established a foundation for the company’s electrification strategy, which now sees hybrid-electric vehicles accounting for over 30 per cent of Honda brand sales in Canada. Core models such as the Civic, Accord, and CR-V are powered by the award-winning two-motor hybrid-electric system, continuing Honda’s commitment to efficiency and sustainability.

First-generation Honda Insight and aluminium excellence

Launched in December 1999, the first-generation Honda Insight was a groundbreaking vehicle designed specifically as a hybrid. It remains one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles ever sold in Canada, with a highway fuel economy rating of 3.4 L/100 km. Built alongside the NSX and S2000 sports cars at Honda's Takanezawa Plant in Japan, the Insight showcased the brand’s pioneering use of aluminium in automobile manufacturing.

To achieve record-setting fuel efficiency, the vehicle manufacturing company’s engineers employed a range of advanced technologies, including:

- Integrated Motor Assist (IMA™): An innovative hybrid powertrain paired with the world's smallest, lightest, and most efficient 1.0-litre gasoline engine.

- Sophisticated aerodynamics: A design achieving a remarkably low drag coefficient of 0.25, critical for optimising efficiency.

- Aluminium construction: A lightweight aluminium body and structure reduced the vehicle's weight by nearly 50 per cent compared to the steel body of a Civic Hatchback, while enhancing torsional rigidity by 38 per cent.

Honda’s expertise with aluminium originated from the first-generation NSX, the world’s first mass-produced all-aluminium car. This knowledge was further refined in the Insight, which utilised stamped aluminium sheets, extruded aluminium frames, and die-cast components. These innovations not only ensured exceptional fuel economy but also enhanced structural rigidity and advanced safety performance.

Electrification journey

The legacy of the Insight continues to influence the global brand’s modern hybrid and electric vehicle lineup. "Honda has been making hybrid-electric history in Canada for 25 years. It began with the Insight, and our electrification journey continues with our core hybrid models, the Civic, CR-V, and Accord," said Emile Korkor, Assistant Vice President, Honda Canada. He emphasised that these popular hybrid models are integral to Honda’s strategy to achieve global carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities by 2050.

From aluminium to the future of electrification

As the company expands its hybrid and electric vehicle offerings, the use of aluminium remains a cornerstone of its manufacturing strategy. The company's extensive experience with lightweight aluminium structures directly supports the development of efficient and sustainable vehicles. From the Insight’s groundbreaking design to Honda’s current lineup of hybrid-electric models, aluminium has been pivotal in achieving industry-leading fuel efficiency and advancing towards a zero-carbon future.

With its legacy of innovation, Honda is well-positioned to lead the automotive industry into an electrified era while maintaining its focus on lightweight, efficient, and environmentally friendly vehicle designs.
