Gränges' climate objectives for the near term in 2030 and achieving net zero by 2040 have been officially validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This validation affirms that Gränges' goals are in harmony with the latest climate science, align with the objectives of the Paris Agreement, and reflect a steadfast commitment to implementing emission reduction measures in accordance with scientific recommendations.
In June 2022, Gränges became a member of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and, in January 2023, submitted its updated climate goals for validation. The endorsement from SBTi underscores Gränges' steadfast commitment to sustainability and its determined efforts to diminish the environmental impact throughout its business operations and along the entire value chain.
The SBTi is a global partnership between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Science-based targets provide a clearly defined pathway for companies and financial institutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, helping prevent the worst impacts of climate change and future-proof business growth. Targets are considered science-based if they align with the decarbonization level required to keep global warming to well-below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.
Jörgen Rosengren, the President and CEO of Gränges said, "This is an important milestone in our sustainability journey. SBTi-validated climate goals give confidence to our customers that they can get industry-leading sustainable and circular solutions from Gränges. I look forward to working with our partners to drive innovation, decarbonisation, and growth in the aluminium industry."
With the SBTi approval, Gränges has committed to the below targets:
Net-zero target
Long-term targets
Near-term targets
Emphasizing a persistent commitment to recycling, producing low-carbon primary aluminium, and increasing reliance on renewable energy within Gränges' internal operations will be crucial strategies for achieving a net-zero outcome.
Sofia Hedevåg, the SVP of Sustainability at Gränges, said, "The approval confirms our trustworthy and ambitious climate goals and decarbonization plans. I'm proud of all colleagues at Gränges who have contributed to developing our ambitious action plans towards net zero and who are highly engaged in making these plans happen."
