Detroit-based General Motors (GM) will invest over USD 150 million in its Saginaw Metal Casting Operations (SCMO) in Michigan for the production of the sixth generation of V-8 engine blocks and cylinder heads used in full-size pickup trucks.

The investment adds to GM’s approximately USD 5.5 billion spent in 2025 and supports the Saginaw facility and its workforce. It also follows the USD 500 million announced in January 2023 for the Flint Engine plant tied to the same next-generation V-8 programme.

“This significant investment of over USD 150 million is a clear commitment to the plant and our people,” says John Lancaster, SCMO plant director. “By enabling the production of next-generation engine blocks and cylinder heads for full-size trucks, the plant is well-positioned for the future. This not only secures existing jobs but also strengthens the local economy and ensures the plant continues to be an integral part of the automotive supply chain.”

The funding will go toward installing new equipment and tooling at SMCO as the plant gets ready to produce the next-generation engines, with production expected to start in 2027. In the meantime, the facility will continue manufacturing fifth-generation V-8 engine blocks.
