The residents of Nyinahin in the Atwima Mponua district of the Ashanti Region have made an urgent appeal to Parliament to ratify the Ashanti Bauxite Limited (ABL) Mining Lease as lawmakers assemble for an emergency session on September 3, 2024.
{alcircleadd}During a protest march in Nyinahin, residents voiced their deep frustration over the ongoing delay in ratifying the lease, underlining the project's critical importance to the region's development. The demonstrators, led by spokesperson Dr Peter Twum, marched through the district capital, urging Parliament to expedite the ratification process.
Dr Twum underscored the significance of the lease ratification, noting that it represents the final major hurdle in establishing a bauxite mine and refinery in Nyinahin and the surrounding communities. He emphasised that any further delays would be unacceptable, given the project's potential to significantly transform the district's economy and greatly improve the lives of its residents.
As the emergency parliamentary session approaches, the people of Nyinahin are looking to their lawmakers to take decisive action and move the project forward. They recognise its potential to catalyse economic growth and bring much-needed development to the area.
Dr Twum stated, "Whoever opposes the ratification of the ABL mining lease is an enemy of progress, and we will never forgive that person."
"This is the closest we have come to seeing something as major as a bauxite mine with a refinery solution developed in our area. We have been sitting on these bauxite resources since Ghana was founded, yet our people remain impoverished, with no job opportunities for the youth. All we ask is for Parliament to hear our request and ratify the mining lease."
Ghana is a significant contender in global bauxite production, boasting an impressive reserve estimated at 900 million tonnes. Yet, this wealth of natural resources still needs to be tapped mainly, missing out on significant economic opportunities. With strategic planning and investment, Ghana has the potential to transform its bauxite industry, catalysing industrial growth, creating jobs, and boosting the national economy.
