
Century Aluminium Company announced on Tuesday, March 24, that together with the United Steel Workers Local 9423, it has agreed to extend the labour contract for one year. The contract was set to expire on April 1, 2020.

Michael Bless, President and Chief Executive Officer of Century Aluminium, said: “We want to thank the representatives of the local and international unions for the partnership evident in this development. We all share the clear focus on the health and welfare of our employees, their families and our communities, as well as on the importance of sustaining the operations of the plant; this dedication is consistent with the approach at all of our facilities.”
Commenting on the measures taken by Century Aluminium to contain the spread of COVID-19, Mr Bless said they already instituted temporary policies and practices at all the facilities to ensure the wellbeing of their employees and visitors. Besides, they have designed best practices to address the unique requirements for primary aluminium operation as to be able to continue seamless function amidst the current and prospective near-and-mid-term environmental challenges.
Michael Bless said, “We are in constant contact with our suppliers and customers, and are thankful for their cooperation and partnership. The situation is obviously developing and we are remaining appropriately vigilant on all fronts. At this time we see no impediment to sustaining our ability to operate all of our plants.”
From lowering cost structure to mitigating risk and increasing liquidity during the short-and-medium-term, Century Aluminium has implemented a host of other measures to combat the present situation, according to Mr Bless. The company has ceased discretionary spending of all types and is optimizing working capital to decrease costs. It has assured to adopt further strategies, policies, and actions as the situation demand and to communicate openly with employees, communities, suppliers, customers, and investors.
