Bhekuzulu Gumbi, 26, founder of Matawuzeni BMG, has been honoured with the Southern Africa Change Catalyst Award (Sacca) for entrepreneurs. Representing northern KwaZulu-Natal, Gumbi's company, which specialises in metal doors and windows, has overcome significant challenges, including late payments, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and rising costs.
Despite these obstacles, Matawuzeni BMG has maintained resilience, delivering general construction and fabrication services to its clients. Gumbi described the awards ceremony at Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre as an inspiring event that provided valuable insights and set a motivating tone for the day.
Gumbi highlighted that the day's pinnacle was the awards ceremony, where he was honoured with the SDG9 award for his contributions to industry innovation and infrastructure, in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He viewed this recognition as a testament to the power of unity and collaboration in driving positive change.
Gumbi was particularly inspired by the keynote addresses from distinguished speakers, including Maxwell Gomera, Director of the Africa Sustainable Finance Hub and UN Sustainable Development Programme Resident Representative in South Africa; Cuthbert Ncube, Chairperson of the African Tourism Board; Matthews Mmopi, an expert on sustainability and mental health; and Lerato Kganyago, a specialist in gender equality and poverty.
He emphasised his commitment to maintaining high quality and customer satisfaction standards and building robust relationships with mentors, partners, suppliers, and stakeholders. Gumbi prioritises sustainable practices and social responsibility while continuously innovating and adapting to evolving market conditions.
