Gideon Boako, an aide to Mahamudu Bawumia the Vice President of Ghana, revealed that around three-quarters of Ghana’s bauxite reserve were sold to another company by John Dramani Mahama, the former President of Ghana. The company, to whom Ghana’s bauxite reserve was sold, is associated with Ibrahim Mahama, the brother of Dramani Mahama.
According to Gideon, within less than a month of his exit from office and losing the 2016 election, the Mahama administration sold the Nyinahin reserve which includes around 75 percent of the bauxite reserve in Ghana to Exton Cubic, associated with Ibrahim Mahama.
“But for the intervention of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government that cancelled the deal, Ghana would have been the worse for it,” said Gideon Boako on Net2 TV’s The Seat Show.
“Atewa has bauxite, Nyinahin has and Awaso also has but about 70 – 75% of Ghana’s bauxite is in Nyinahin, not Atewa,” added Gideon, highlighting the place where Ghana’s bauxite reserves were mostly present.
“It is the Nyinahin reserve that two weeks to his exit, Mahama awarded to his brother’s company, Exton Cubic. But Dr. Bawumia took it upon himself and worked to have government to cancel it and it was vested back into the state for the larger benefit of Ghanaians,” he added.
According to Gideon, the New Patriotic Party government’s main intention was to ensure that such costly assets should not go to one family. He highlighted projects which showed that bauxite in the Nyinahin reserve that was collateralized under the SinoHydro project will gain benefit from.
The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation was started by the government per an act of Parliament to make sure the development and mining of Ghana’s bauxite as well as the aluminium reserves.
In 2016, Exotin Cubic was awarded the Nyinahin concession. However later on, the deal was cancelled by the Supreme Court after an order from the High Court was released.
