Ferrari’s first SUV Purosangue steers strong on aluminium alloy chassis

EDITED BY : 3MINS READ

Ferrari has long been planning to introduce an SUV to its luxury car series to align pathways with its contemporaries. The dream has come true with the revelation of the first-ever SUV created for the brand Purosangue SUV. The lower chassis structure of the car has been forged entirely from a high-strength aluminium alloy.

This new addition to the Prancing Horse’s 75-years old history doesn’t resemble a conventional SUV; rather, it is a four-door four-seater luxury car. Although this is the very first Ferrari model with four-door specifications, the brand has kept its standard while supplying the 6.5-litre naturally-aspirated V12 engine that generates a massive 533kW thrusting the vehicle to 100kph in 3.3 seconds.

Ferrari claims the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission changes faster than the previous 7-speed DCT and that downshifts have been regulated to “optimise smooth shifting with a specific focus on driving pleasure and emphasising the sound of the new V12 engine.”

The Purosangue’s lower chassis structure is completely created out of highly-rigid aluminium alloy, and when merged with the upper body specifications, it forms a spaceframe chassis that consists of closed-section extrusions inter-joined by castings into which load-bearing aluminium sheet metal elements are amalgamated.

Though Ferrari Purosangue is comparatively bigger, the chassis of the car is lighter than the brand’s earlier four-seaters.

The outer body covering of the SUV has been formed by compounding aluminium and carbon fibre with high-strength steel incorporated in essential zones. The mechanical joints in the framework have been joined by applying structural adhesives so that the car model might have added flexibility in regards to body weight.

The brand claims that the Purosangue has been designed with almost 85 per cent sustainably produced raw materials, ultimately increasing the eco-friendliness of the car.

The SUV’s fabric roof-lining has been created with recycled polyester; the carpet below is made out of polyamide recycled from fishing nets collected from the ocean beds and newly discovered Alcantara, which also is extracted from recycled polyester. Ferrari Purosangue is the world’s very first car that has applied this extraordinary version of Alcantara made with 68% post-consumer recycled polyester.

To successfully utilise the Alcantara material, the brand had to get a Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) certification from ICEA. This global standard scrutinises recycled material and follows its journey from the origin to the end-user product.

Ferrari Purosangue customers are eligible to ask for this military-grade material in exchange for the usual leather or traditional carpentry.

Future of Aluminium in Transportation Sector

Purosangue originally translates to ‘pure blood’ or ‘thoroughbred’ in Italian and is Ferrari’s one of the best V12 models. Ferrari doesn’t shift its track that suddenly. However, its competitors, Lamborghini and Porsche, are keen on developing more SUVs; the company wishes to churn only 20 per cent of its total sales with this very expensive SUV edition.
