German downstream aluminium exports fall 13% in H1 2026 but US enters top 5 with 228.1% import surge
Germany’s downstream aluminium export map underwent a noticeable shift in H1 2026. Shipments to the world fell, with most of Germany’s traditional European customers taking less aluminium downstream product. Yet, amid that broad retreat, one market moved in the opposite direction: the United States. German downstream aluminium exports to the world fell to 897,773.19 tonnes in H1 2026 from 1 million tonnes in H1 2025, a decline of 13 per cent year on year. The contrast was particularly sharp in the US market. American imports of German downstream aluminium reached 68,061.61 tonnes in H1 2026, up 228.1 per cent from just 20,743.62 tonnes in H1 2025. The increase of more than 47,000 tonnes was enough to push the US into Germany’s top 5 destinations for the first time. The export map is...
Caustic soda plant setup in India: How aluminium growth is reshaping demand, costs and opportunities
Caustic soda may not be the most visible ingredient in aluminium production, but without it, the journey from bauxite to alumina would look very different. The chemical, also known as sodium hydroxide, is a crucial reagent in the Bayer process, where it helps dissolve alumina-bearing material in bauxite and separate it from impurities. The dissolved material is then processed to recover alumina, which ultimately feeds aluminium production. That makes caustic soda more than just another industrial chemical. Its availability, price and efficient use can influence the economics of alumina refining and, by extension, the wider aluminium value chain. As India expands its alumina and aluminium capacity, the requirement for this chemical is also becoming increasingly important. For companies...

With powerful rumble of its four engines, the 69-year-old B-17 bomber “Aluminum Overcast” lifted off from Trenton-Mercer Airport Monday afternoon, casting a shadow from its 103-foot wingspan. “We find that a lot of people have a connection to the plane,” said pilot Neil Morrison, who has been flying the Aluminum Overcast for about a decade, before taking the plane over Ewing, Princeton and Bucks County, Pennsylvania on one if its flight tours. Although the numbers of living World War II veterans who may have had firsthand experience fighting in the B-17 or those who may have fought with the bomber planes overhead have shrunk in recent years, the plane still has appeal to many. “We see plenty of grandkids who had a great uncle or a father that flew the B-17,” he said. The flying piece of...

Aluminum climbed for the first time in six days
Aluminum climbed for the first time in six days as stockpiles declined to the lowest in 33 months and United Co. Rusal Plc, the biggest producer, forecast that demand will exceed supply next year. The metal in London rose as much as 0.3 percent. Global supply may lag behind demand by as much as 1.3 million tons next year, compared with 1.5 million tons by the end of this year, Vladislav Soloviev, first deputy chief executive officer, said yesterday. Stockpiles tracked by the London Metal Exchange have fallen 15 percent this year to the lowest since December 2011. “Forecasts of a shortage this year and next year provided support to aluminum that appeared to be a bit oversold,” said Kazuhiko Saito, an analyst at Fujitomi Co., a commodities broker in Tokyo. Aluminum for delivery in three...

Rusal expects 1.3 mln T global aluminium deficit in 2015
Russia's United Company Rusal forecasts a global aluminium deficit of 1.3 million tonnes in 2015, which will keep the spot price premium for the metal high, an executive at the world's biggest producer of the metal said on Tuesday. Despite this, more than half of the production capacity which is currently mothballed globally after years of falling prices will not be restarted, Rusal First Deputy Chief Executive Vladislav Soloviev said. Many aluminium producers have cut loss-making capacity or shut down completely as they struggled with rising costs, falling prices and a flood of new Chinese capacity in the past few years. The aluminium smelting process is continuous and smelters cannot easily be stopped and restarted. If production is interrupted the metal in the pots solidifies, often...
