German downstream aluminium exports fall 13% in H1 2026 but US enters top 5 with 228.1% import surge
Germany’s downstream aluminium export map underwent a noticeable shift in H1 2026. Shipments to the world fell, with most of Germany’s traditional European customers taking less aluminium downstream product. Yet, amid that broad retreat, one market moved in the opposite direction: the United States. German downstream aluminium exports to the world fell to 897,773.19 tonnes in H1 2026 from 1 million tonnes in H1 2025, a decline of 13 per cent year on year. The contrast was particularly sharp in the US market. American imports of German downstream aluminium reached 68,061.61 tonnes in H1 2026, up 228.1 per cent from just 20,743.62 tonnes in H1 2025. The increase of more than 47,000 tonnes was enough to push the US into Germany’s top 5 destinations for the first time. The export map is...
Caustic soda plant setup in India: How aluminium growth is reshaping demand, costs and opportunities
Caustic soda may not be the most visible ingredient in aluminium production, but without it, the journey from bauxite to alumina would look very different. The chemical, also known as sodium hydroxide, is a crucial reagent in the Bayer process, where it helps dissolve alumina-bearing material in bauxite and separate it from impurities. The dissolved material is then processed to recover alumina, which ultimately feeds aluminium production. That makes caustic soda more than just another industrial chemical. Its availability, price and efficient use can influence the economics of alumina refining and, by extension, the wider aluminium value chain. As India expands its alumina and aluminium capacity, the requirement for this chemical is also becoming increasingly important. For companies...

Rusal to develop ethane power plant to supply to its Jamaica alumina refinery
Jamaica's energy ministry has accepted a plan by Russian aluminum producer Rusal to develop a 140MW ethane-fired power plant to supply its mothballed bauxite refinery in Jamaica. Rusal's 1.7mn t/y Alpart refinery in the southwestern part of the island will use 50MW of the power, with the rest to be sold to local grid manager JPSco. Ethane is a natural gas liquid that is used mainly as a feedstock in petrochemical industries. The proposal for the ethane power plant was proposed to the government in July by the manager of Rusal's Jamaican operations, Igor Dorofeev. Rusal was planning to build a 150MW facility, Dorofeev had said then. The decision to...

Aluminium marginally up on global cues
Aluminium futures traded a shade higher at Rs 118.55 per kg today as participants strengthened their positions, supported by an upward trend overseas. Further, rising demand in the domestic spot markets also influenced metal prices. At the Multi Commodity Exchange, aluminium for delivery in September inched up by 15 paise, or 0.13%, to Rs 118.55 per kg in business turnover of 204 lots. Likewise, the metal for delivery in October traded marginally higher by 10 paise, or 0.08%, to Rs 119.75 per kg in 113 lots. Marketmen said apart from increased domestic demand, a firming global trend in the base metals pack at the London Metal Exchange ahead of the US GDP data, mainly influenced metal prices at futures trade here.

Aluminium industry awaits policy amendments
According to Non-Ferrous Metal Industries Association (NFMIA) chairperson Bob Stone, the secondary aluminium industry has remained uncompetitive in the world market of beneficiated aluminium products, despite the directive of the preferential pricing on scrap metal, issued by the Department of Economic Development in September last year. The policy directive, which provides local industry buyers of scrap metal with a preferential price of 20% below the international price, is currently under review. Stone stated in a financial publication article last month that the policy had not been successful in lowering prices and in stemming the flow of exports, as several aluminium-scrap sellers resorted to excuses, subversion or blocking sales by undermining the policy practices, while uncertainty...
