Caustic soda plant setup in India: How aluminium growth is reshaping demand, costs and opportunities

Caustic soda may not be the most visible ingredient in aluminium production, but without it, the journey from bauxite to alumina would look very different. The chemical, also known as sodium hydroxide, is a crucial reagent in the Bayer process, where it helps dissolve alumina-bearing material in bauxite and separate it from impurities. The dissolved material is then processed to recover alumina, which ultimately feeds aluminium production. That makes caustic soda more than just another industrial chemical. Its availability, price and efficient use can influence the economics of alumina refining and, by extension, the wider aluminium value chain. As India expands its alumina and aluminium capacity, the requirement for this chemical is also becoming increasingly important. For companies...

Aluminum investment across North America and Asia: Who leads reshaping the next phase of growth?

Aluminum investment has been spreading across the entire value chain, from primary smelting and alumina refining to recycling, rolling, extrusion and battery foil, building more integrated and higher-value supply chains. During the past 5 years, the US and Canada in North America and China in Asia have been grabbing headlines pertaining to the aluminum industry. These updates have involved growth stories or have shed light on volatile market situations. How have these headlines contributed to a greater picture for the benefit of the aluminum industries of the two continents? Mingtai Al. to Raise $122 Mln via private placement for aluminum extrusion project

Henan Mingtai Al. Industrial Co. plans to raise no more than 750 million yuan ($122 million) via private placement to build 20,000-tpy transport aluminum extrusion project, the company said in a statement filed to the Shanghai Stock Exchange on November 7. The project will be located in Xingyang City, Henan province, where several railway lines converge. Construction is scheduled to last two years, it added. China’s output of aluminum extrusions in transportation applications grew at a CAGR of 30.5% between 2005-2011. But aluminum extrusions in transportation applications accounted for a mere 11.9% of total aluminum extrusion consumption in China in 2011, much lower than in developed countries. This implies great market potential in the segment.

China’s once top aluminum producing province short of aluminum as local processing industry booms

Henan, used to be China’s top aluminum producing province, now finds itself short of the light metal due to its booming processing industry, Shanghai Metals Market has learned. With the rapid development of local processing industry, the province will see its aluminum production (forecasted at 3.28 million tonnes) fall short of consumption (forecasted at 4.5 million tonnes) in 2014. Henan’s Gongyi City – China’s top flat-rolled aluminum products production base – is home to over 30 aluminum processors, whose combined annual capacity has surpassed 3 million tonnes. 2.5 million tonnes of aluminum ingot is needed annually to feed such large capacity in the city. But most smelters in Henan are producing aluminum liquid for their own use or selling aluminum liquid to nearby processors. This...

Investors put pressure on Rio Tinto to distribute excess capital

Rio Tinto is under pressure to deliver on the CEO’s promise to become a "cash machine" for investors as it justifies snubbing a merger approach from Glencore. With Glencore effectively barred from making a renewed bid until April, Rio has a window to woo shareholders through stock buybacks and selling non-core assets. In August, CEO Sam Walsh said his $3.2bn cost-cutting drive increased the options for distributing excess capital. Now, with Glencore CEO Ivan Glasenberg hovering, investors said it was time for Rio to act on Walsh’s words. He will update shareholders on the company’s strategy at seminars in Sydney on November 28 and London on December 4. Rio will then post full-year results in February when analysts said it was likely to announce the first buyback since 2012. The...

New study supports the use of a POSS molecule to strengthen aluminum alloys in automobiles

A new study supports the use of a POSS® molecule to strengthen aluminum alloys in automobiles. “Influence of Nano-structured Silanols on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of A4047 and A359 Aluminum Casting Alloys,” a study conducted in partnership between Michigan State University and Vinci Technology Corporation, is slated for release next year by the American Foundry Society. The study results show that TriSilanol POSS, created by silanol bonds at the corners of the POSS molecule, increased both the strength and toughness of A4047 and A359 aluminum alloys. In the A359 sample where POSS was added, elongation to failure increased from 23% to 250% over the control sample. According to the authors, these results hold great promise for the automotive industry. “In recent decades,...

Alumina prices need to surge for the supply to increase: Goldman Sachs

Goldman Sachs Groups Inc. predicts that in order to spur supply of alumina, which is currently in deficit, the price of alumina needs to be increased. After the Indonesian ban, the bauxite reserves across the world are rapidly falling, which in turn has caused the Chinese alumina output growth to fall. According to the Goldman analysts, the price of alumina has to increase to $370/mt by next year’s second quarter and in the second half of 2015, it should be touching $380/mt to encourage supply growth and urge the Chinese refineries to use the more expensive imported bauxite. They also said, the alumina supply deficit is likely to be around 639,000 tons in 2015 increasing from the recorded 138,000 tons in 2014. The hike in the alumina prices will also spur new bauxite development and...
