AL Circle Analysis: Bauxite developments, alumina trade & primary aluminium market dynamics across Australia, Guinea, US & India
The aluminium industry is entering another phase of supply-chain repositioning. Across bauxite, alumina and primary aluminium, companies are investing in new resources, consolidating strategic assets and expanding processing capacity, while governments are increasingly treating domestic supply as a strategic priority. The latest developments from Australia, Guyana, Guinea, Indonesia, the US and India point to a market where resource security, processing location and control over supply chains are becoming as important as production growth. At the same time, new trading mechanisms and changing investment patterns are beginning to influence how aluminium and its raw materials reach the market. Bauxite supply expands, but securing the right tonnes is becoming harder In Western Australia, VBX...
China's 22.87 Mt extrusion market faces a structural shift as 317 GW solar growth counters weak construction demand
The global aluminium extrusion landscape is undergoing a structural transition driven by industrial decarbonisation, global electrification, and the rapid deployment of clean energy infrastructure. Historically anchored by civil engineering and residential real estate, demand for extruded aluminium profiles in China, the world’s dominant manufacturing hub, is decoupling from traditional property sectors. Persistent structural weakness in China’s domestic construction market has slowed the consumption of conventional architectural profiles such as window frames, door sections, and curtain walls. Conversely, advanced industrial applications, specifically solar photovoltaic (PV) racking, battery energy storage systems (BESS), power grid modernisation, and electric vehicles (EVs), have...

Indian aluminium companies export more as home market slows down
Hindalco Industries and Vedanta Resources, India's two largest aluminium producers, have stepped up exports amid increasing capacity and poor domestic demand. Exports of primary aluminium from the country surged 65% in the first half of the current fiscal, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, as demand slowed down at home due to a sluggish Economy, while overseas markets offered a better opportunity to Indian producers. Hindalco has exported as much as half of its produce during this financial year, compared to less than a fifth last year, while Vedanta Resources exported about 40% of its output in India against about 30% in 2013-14. "If we find it is better, economical and makes sense to export, we will-...better than holding onto the stock," said Hindalco's managing...

Open Energi joins Aluminium Federation
The Aluminium Federation (ALFED), the body that represents the UK aluminium sector, has welcomed Open Energi as a member. UK company Open Energi, which has offices in London and Manchester, has developed an energy demand response management product, which enables heavy electricity users, including many in the metals sector, to match use to availability. In addition to delivering new revenues to users, demand response management promises to lower the UK’s risk of blackouts, at the same time as reducing the overall cost of energy. It achieves this by avoiding the need to build new power capacity, making it easier to manage intermittent renewable energy supplies, and enabling significant emissions reductions. “Open Energi’s technology automatically responds to fluctuations in demand within...

Indian scrap prices may fall in line with global trend in February
It would seem foolish to predict anything but a fall in Indian scrap prices in line with the global trend in February. According to TSI, market participants are predicting a downward movement of around $10-15 a ton in the immediate future as the scrap industry cannot continue to play second fiddle to semi-finished material from Russia and China. If this correction occurs it seems likely that the market will remain depressed with only the Indian budget and its potential increase in duties for semi-finished products, to be unveiled this month, offering a potential catalyst for recovery.

Pahang Govt. to cease mining activities if pollution continues
The Pahang Govt. says if the pollution problem persists, despite the recent steps taken, they will not hesitate to cease bauxite and iron ore mining activities. Following the complaints raised by Chinese tourists regarding the dirty condition of the Kuantan Port, the state government took the matter very seriously as it not only affected the local residents but also the state’s tourism industry. The government has tried to rectify the issue by meeting with 106 bauxite and iron ore operators and arriving at the decision to prevent bauxite-laden lorries to take any other road beside the Jalan Gebeng-Bypass, with an ultimatum of two months to clear out the bauxite stores at the port. UC RUSAL, a leading global aluminium producer, notes that official LME aluminium stocks fell below 4 million tonnes on 11 February for the first time since May 2009. RUSAL notes that LME aluminium stocks keep declining and maintain a steady decrease of around 7 thousand tonnes per day. This drawdown reflects the Company’s view of the supply and demand balance on the global market excluding China which is currently in deficit. The fundamental demand for aluminium remains strong and RUSAL expects to see the stocks at LME warehouses to continue to decrease throughout 2015. Premiums fill in the gap between the LME pricing mechanism and physical market. RUSAL’s expectation is that stocks (reported/unreported) are being delivered to the consumer market to address the supply deficit so up until...

Aluminium overtakes copper for No.2 spot at Rio Tinto
Rio Tinto has been struggling for years to recover from the $38 billion purchase that elevated it to the world's biggest aluminium company but also brought it to the verge of bankruptcy. In Rio Tinto's financial results on Thursday, data showed aluminium had surpassed copper as the second biggest contributor to underlying earnings - $1.25 billion against $910 million for copper - in 2014 behind iron ore. For perspective, in 2013, aluminium contributed $550 million versus $820 million by copper.
