AL Circle Analysis: Bauxite developments, alumina trade & primary aluminium market dynamics across Australia, Guinea, US & India
The aluminium industry is entering another phase of supply-chain repositioning. Across bauxite, alumina and primary aluminium, companies are investing in new resources, consolidating strategic assets and expanding processing capacity, while governments are increasingly treating domestic supply as a strategic priority. The latest developments from Australia, Guyana, Guinea, Indonesia, the US and India point to a market where resource security, processing location and control over supply chains are becoming as important as production growth. At the same time, new trading mechanisms and changing investment patterns are beginning to influence how aluminium and its raw materials reach the market. Bauxite supply expands, but securing the right tonnes is becoming harder In Western Australia, VBX...
China's 22.87 Mt extrusion market faces a structural shift as 317 GW solar growth counters weak construction demand
The global aluminium extrusion landscape is undergoing a structural transition driven by industrial decarbonisation, global electrification, and the rapid deployment of clean energy infrastructure. Historically anchored by civil engineering and residential real estate, demand for extruded aluminium profiles in China, the world’s dominant manufacturing hub, is decoupling from traditional property sectors. Persistent structural weakness in China’s domestic construction market has slowed the consumption of conventional architectural profiles such as window frames, door sections, and curtain walls. Conversely, advanced industrial applications, specifically solar photovoltaic (PV) racking, battery energy storage systems (BESS), power grid modernisation, and electric vehicles (EVs), have...

China shows the slowest aluminium production growth since 2009
Chinese aluminium production in the first two month of 2015 showed a growth of 6.8% compared to last year and has been the slowest start to a year since 2009. Bloomberg had forecasted the growth this year would be around 7.7%. The latest data was released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday in Beijing. Due to irregular trade during the week-long Lunar New Year holidays, the industrial data including output, retail sales and fixed asset investments are combined for the month of January and February. The Lunar holidays occur at differing dates each year and started on Feb 18 this year. “The data shows demand for January and February was weak, but it also reflects production cuts,” said Helen Lau, a Hong Kong-based analyst at Argonaut Securities. “There is still room for the...

Superfund decision for Columbia Falls aluminum smelter expeded this fall
Columbia Falls may know by autumn whether the now-closed aluminum smelter there will become a Superfund site. Last Tuesday the owners of the Columbia Falls Aluminum Company announced the smelter is permanently closing. The next day the Environmental Protection Agency notified Governor Steve Bullock it proposes to add the plant to its priority list of industrial sites that should be cleaned. "Investigation has shown that there are contaminants that potentially could impact human health and the environment at the site. A listing on the National Priorities List identifies sites where additional information is needed" said EPA's Cynthia Peterson. Smelter officials oppose a Superfund listing, describing it as slow and stigmatizing. EPA say the Priorities list proposal will be added to the...

Chinese overproduction continues to be a threat to the western aluminium producers
According to a recent research, the unexpected advancement in the Chinese aluminium industry has caused noticeable damage to western firms like Rio Tinto. Rio had acquired the Canadian giant Alcan in 2007 and justified the purchase by the expectation that China would soon stop producing, shutting down unproductive smelters and start importing causing the aluminium prices to improve. However China instead of ceasing production, stepped up production aided by government subsidies which has causing the total aluminium production to double since 2007, says the former executive of Rio Tinto. This continued expansion kept the price of the metal low which did not experience a dramatic rise even at the heights of the boom. This has caused Rio Tinto to sell off down two-thirds of its $US38 billion...

South Korea buys 2,000 tons of aluminium paying the lowest premium
South Korea has paid the smallest premium in more than a year to source aluminium, the results of a tender showed on Wednesday, the latest sign of intensifying pressure on premiums that is putting the operations of global producers under threat. South Korea bought 1,000 tonnes of aluminium to be sourced from India and another 1,000 tonnes from Australia for May 24 shipment via two tenders closed on Tuesday, the state-run Public Procurement Service said on its website. K Commodity Co Ltd won both bids by offering to accept premiums of $330 per tonne, CIF Incheon, over London Metal Exchange (LME) prices. The drop in premiums is likely to boost headwinds for aluminium producers, who receive the delivery surcharge on top of LME cash prices. The drop represents a 7 percent fall from a $355...

Managing Director, Isirelli Dagaga highlighted the issue in an interview where he also says that they even refrain from mining in wet weathers as it results the production. The company hopes to mine 400,000 tons of bauxite from the current mining site located in the Votua village in Bua. Dagaga says that the ships come to them only once a month that too depends on whether they have enough stockpiles. So they are only stockpiling at present but the constant heavy showers in affecting their progress. “We expect the next ship to arrive on the 4th of April,” he says. Noranda, consumer parties reach agreement on allocation of Ameren Missouri electricity rates
Noranda Aluminum Holding Corporation announced it has joined in a rate design agreement with consumer groups in the Missouri Public Service Commission ("PSC") general electricity rate case for Ameren Missouri. The consumer agreement remains subject to approval by the PSC as part of the Ameren rate case, which is expected to be decided by May 31, 2015. Among other provisions, the consumer agreement establishes a new electricity rate structure for Noranda's aluminum smelter in New Madrid, Missouri. The proposed smelter rate structure has a ten-year term, an initial rate of $34 per megawatt hour, and exempts the smelter from fuel adjustment charges. Compared to rates in place during 2014, at full production the proposed smelter rate structure would have reduced the smelter's electricity...

Tomago aluminium pushes for a final call on RET
As the fate of RET still remains in the dark, Tomago Aluminium is making fresh attempts to urge the MPs and senators to reach a final decision on the case soon requesting a 100 percent exemption for the aluminium industry to be effective from January 1, 2015. The energy-intensive aluminium industry has been the biggest sufferer having paid more than $500 million in Renewable Energy Target (RET) costs already (since 2001) with Tomago alone has paying $120 million. Matt Howell, the CEO of Tomago says that the extra cost imposed by RET had been difficult to digest at a time when aluminium was already suffering. “The Renewable Energy Target costs us around $25 million per annum at Tomago. Affordable energy is critical for aluminium smelters. Removing regulatory costs, such as the RET, would...

China aluminum semis exports fall 22.45% MoM in January 2015
China exported 380,000 mt of aluminum semis in January, up 42% YoY, but down 110,000 mt or 22.45% MoM, customs data showed. A 63.19% MoM plunge in extrusion exports dragged down overall aluminum semis exports. Extrusion exports increased 6.37% YoY to 67,000 mt, though. Foil exports gained 10.52% YoY and 6.49% MoM to 82,000 mt, and exports of plate/sheet and strip increased 91.88% YoY and 9.74% MoM to 214,000 mt. Aluminum semis exports returned to normal in January after significant increases in December. The rising SHFE/LME aluminum price ratio and stricter customs scrutiny made robust growth of token exports unsustainable. Falling aluminum premiums overseas has left Chinese aluminum semis less attractive. This impact may be expected to hurt exports of Chinese aluminum semis into Q2.
