Falling China aluminium stocks to lift prices this week
Aluminum prices will gain momentum from falling aluminum stocks in China’s five major markets, which have posted their first declines since after the 2016 Lunar New Year holiday. SMM sees SHFE 1605 aluminum challenging resistance at 11,500 yuan per tonne and spot discounts in China narrowing to 30-70 yuan per tonne. LME aluminum looks set to advance to $1,520-1,560 per tonne on the back of a softer dollar and rising crude oil prices.
Spot demand, global cues lift aluminium futures by 0.59%
Aluminium prices edged up 0.59 per cent to INR 101.90 per kg in futures trade today as participants enlarged positions, supported by strong demand in the spot markets amidst a positive trend in the base metals pack at the London Metal Exchange (LME). Aluminium for delivery in current month edged higher by 60 paise, or 0.59 per cent, to INR 101.90 per kg in a business turnover of 629 lots in futures trade at Multi Commodity Exchange. The embattled Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON) in Akwa Ibom State is to begin production soon, its Managing Director, Mr. Dimitry Zavyalov, has said. AP Govt cancels land allotment to AnRAK for sourcing bauxite
In a significant development, the State Government of Andhra Pradesh is understood to have cancelled the allotment of land to AnRAK Aluminium Limited in the Visakhapatnam Agency. The land was peviously alloted to AnRAK Aluminium for sourcing bauxite for its proposed alumina refinery. The then Congress government headed by Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had entered into an agreement with AnRAK promoted by the Government of the emirate Ras-al-Khaimah, for supply of bauxite to Anrak’s refinery at Rachapalle in Makavarapalem mandal. Department of Commerce initiates circumvention investigation on 5050 Alloy Extrusions
The U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) last Tuesday issued its long-awaited circumvention decision in the Aluminum Extruders’ petition against China Zhongwang. The DOC decided that while 5050 alloyed aluminum extrusions are not expressly covered by the scope of its orders, it initiated an anti-circumvention investigation to determine whether imports of 5050 alloyed extrusions have been circumventing the AD/CVD duties. Traders pulling metal out of London Metal Exchange warehouses is not an uncommon practice. The amount stored in depots tracked by the world's biggest metals bourse has almost halved from a 2013 peak and is near a seven-year low. Appeal for bauxite mining to resume in Pahang
Pahang mineral operators have submitted a memorandum to the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry urging the authorities to reactivate bauxite mining. Pahang Mineral Operators Association vice-president Yap Soon Huat handed over the memorandum to the ministry's principal assistant secretary (Administration and Finance Division) Mohd Nazif Jamaludin in front of Parliament building in Pahang yesterday. SA government urged to help localise aluminium value chain for automakers' sake
Mercedes-Benz SA wants the government to encourage local beneficiation of aluminium, which would allow motor companies to stop importing up to 50 per cent of metals used in their cars. CEO Arno van der Merwe said on Thursday his company was working with the industry and the government to identify raw materials that could be developed locally for inclusion in cars made in SA. Some firms claim local content of 70 per cent or more in their vehicles, but the industry average is just more than 40 per cent. Trinidad and Tobago’s Trade and Industry Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon recently made a final determination that exporters from the People’s Republic of China have been dumping aluminium products in Trinidad and Tobago. As a result, Gopee-Scoon has ordered the Comptroller of Customs and Excise to impose anti-dumping duties on Chinese goods. The amount of light, recyclable aluminium in European cars will rise to 180 kg on average by 2020 as automakers look to cut harmful carbon emissions, a senior metals industry official said. China’s Guangxi province will begin building 20 billion yuan ($3.1 billion) worth of rare earth high-Fe aluminium alloy cable new materials industry base in H1 2016, said a recent industry report.
