Alumina production in Europe (inc. Russia) continued to fall during February 2023, marking the seventh consecutive month of decline. According to the International Aluminium Institute, Europe’s (inc. Russia) alumina output in the stated month stood at 492,000 tonnes, reflecting a month-on-month plunge of 4.84 per cent or 25,000 tonnes from 517,000 tonnes. In the previous month, the aluminium ore production in Europe (inc. Russia) amounted to 517,000 tonnes, registering a decrease of 34,000 tonnes or 6.17 per cent from 551,000 tonnes in December 2022.

On a year-on-year calculation, alumina production in Europe (inc. Russia) during February 2023 slumped by 36.6 per cent from 776,000 tonnes, found IAI. The annual and monthly decline in Europe’s alumina output could be attributed to output cuts at refineries due to the energy crisis.
During January-February 2023, Europe’s (inc. Russia) alumina production totalled 1.009 million tonnes, down by 39.25 per cent from 1.661 million tonnes a year ago.
Meanwhile, despite the monthly downfall in Europe’s alumina production, the daily average output in February 2023 stood 5.4 per cent higher at 17,600 tonnes compared to 16,700 tonnes. On a year-on-year basis, the daily output shrank by 36.46 per cent from 27,700 tonnes.
The world alumina production in February 2023 was 10.232 million tonnes, down by 10.40 per cent month-on-month from 11.420 million tonnes, and 9.15 per cent less than 10.262 million tonnes.
In the first two months of the year, the output totalled 21.652 million tonnes versus 22.037 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the last year.
