On 12th March 2022, the executive branch of the European Union, the European Commission has elongated for five years the anti-dumping duties which in force on imports of aluminium household foil from China.
However, this extension follows an inquiry which exhibited that dumping by Chinese exporters pursues amid the measures in place and if the withdrawal for measures comes on board, it would cause a dent to the EU industry. The anti-dumping duties will prevail at their present level of between 6.4% and 30%.
The European Union absorbs around €200 million worth of aluminium household foil annually and is a very alluring market for China, as it has a significant spare production capacity to expand its exports to the EU.
The existing appraise on imports of Chinese aluminium household foil abolish the unfair price advantage that these imports relish. Now, if the measures were discarded, it would steer to a loss of market share for the EU industry, cause job losses and create less interest in building production facilities in the several EU Member States.
The Chinese exporters have formerly tried to evade existing EU duties by modifying the product slightly or by shipping it through Thailand. The EU labelled these bypassing attempts by stretching the anti-dumping measures to the modified product in 2017 and shipments of the product arriving from Thailand in 2021.
