Energy-saving systems for De La Rue’s new tech center
RCKa Architects specified the aluminium glazing systems for De La Rue’s new technology center at Overton Mill in Hampshire. The project also included refurbishment of an existing 1980s office building to house the new research facility.

RCKa’s goal was to create a distinctive, world-class building with a modern façade that would reflect De La Rue’s aspirations as a leading global organization, stimulate innovation and interaction, and blend well into its rural surroundings.

The building’s contemporary design has a sculptural form which features deep reveals and projecting sills to provide shade from the sun in summer, and to allow high levels of natural daylight during the winter months. And by recycling and converting an existing facility, the client gained a new research center for significantly less than the cost of a new building.

Fabricated and installed by ADP Aluminium Systems, Technal’s GEODE-MX62 curtain walling, FXi65 casement windows and CD commercial doors were specified for both the new wing and the refurbished building. Technal is one of Sapa’s aluminium building systems brands.

"Technal’s façade systems met our requirements for cost efficiency, consistency of appearance, aesthetics, thermal performance ... and the GEODE-MX62 curtain walling option could achieve large spans with narrow sight lines to maximize natural light. We are very pleased with how the fenestration solution has unified both the existing and new elements of the building," says project architect Russell Curtis of RCKa Architects.

"Technal’s assistance with the specification made the facade design process very straightforward, despite its complexity, and we are very happy with their team’s technical input."

De La Rue has been involved in the design or production of over 150 national currencies, and it produces a wide range of security documents including passports, driving licenses, authentication labels and tax stamps. The group also manufactures high-speed cash-sorting and inspection equipment.
