At 24, Al Hashimi, a chemical engineer, defies gender stereotypes by skillfully navigating the crane, hoisting her above the sprawling Kizad facility of Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), the UAE's foremost industrial giant beyond oil and gas.

Despite her family's initial concerns about entering a male-dominated sector, Al Hashimi's unwavering commitment to her dream career has driven her forward. "They said it was a difficult job and a job that a man does," she shared.

With her gaze set on inspiring others, Al Hashimi, an American University of Sharjah graduate, emphasizes the importance of women's contributions to their passions, dismantling the notion that certain fields are gender-exclusive. "My presence here will hopefully inspire other young ladies to pursue roles in operations," she states.

Al Hashimi's role as one of the few women in EGA's operations teams in Abu Dhabi and Dubai entails overseeing shifts, facilitating operations, ensuring safety protocols, and fostering team cohesion. Despite the scorching 70°C temperatures on the shop floor, she remains resolute and is even eyeing a supervisory position to guide her current team.

Her daily routine involves:

  • Six hours in the crane.
  • Overseeing the maintenance of a 1.6 km line of furnaces.
  • A task demanding constant vigilance in an environment with temperatures reaching up to 960°C.

She navigates challenges such as manoeuvring heavy components through live areas, making safety paramount.

Breaking down barriers, Al Hashimi shares how her determination helped her integrate with her predominantly male team. "I had a talk with them to let them know that, yes, I'm the first woman, but we are a team," she asserts.

Her openness bridged the gap, fostering camaraderie and allowing her colleagues to approach her for guidance. Amidst sweltering conditions, Al Hashimi remains focused by drawing inspiration from her purpose: proving that women can excel in demanding environments. Her resolve is strengthened by the words of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, affirming women's pivotal role in all spheres.

Al Hashimi offers valuable advice for young women aspiring to defy conventions and join operational roles, "Don't be afraid, and always learn new things."

She envisions a future where women's presence in operations is normalized and limitations are shattered through dedication and determination.
