Global Recycling Day, observed annually on March 18th, is a testament to our collective commitment to preserving the planet's resources. First initiated in 2018, this day serves as a reminder of the pivotal role recycling plays in safeguarding our environment for future generations. Nestlé Nespresso SA, in alignment with this global initiative, underscores the significance of recycling, particularly concerning aluminium coffee pods.
Nestlé Nespresso SA emphasises the imperative of recycling aluminium coffee capsules, showcasing a profound dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Aluminium, renowned for its infinite recyclability and barrier properties, epitomises Nespresso's commitment to preserving the freshness of premium coffee and minimising ecological impact.
Nespresso’s green protocol
Since the culmination of 2021, Nespresso has transitioned its Original capsules to contain a minimum of 80% recycled aluminium, with most Vertuo capsules comprising at least 85% recycled aluminium. This deliberate shift underscores Nespresso's unwavering dedication to integrating sustainable practices throughout its operations.
To facilitate effortless recycling, Nespresso equips consumers with dedicated recycling bags alongside each coffee order. These Nespresso recycling bags serve as conduits for seamlessly collecting used aluminium capsules. Once filled, consumers can either engage Nespresso's courier partner or personally deliver the capsules to designated drop-off points, including local Nespresso boutiques.
What is the procedure for aluminium recycling?
Upon collection, Nespresso collaborates with Oricol, its esteemed recycling partner in South Africa, to process the used aluminium capsules. Through state-of-the-art facilities in Johannesburg and Cape Town, Oricol meticulously segregates coffee grounds from aluminium, ensuring optimal recycling efficiency. Subsequently, the residual coffee grounds undergo composting, culminating in the production of natural fertilisers.
The separated aluminium embarks on a transformative journey, undergoing recycling processes at steel smelters. Reimagined into new aluminium products, this recycled material embodies Nespresso's circular economy ethos, where waste finds new life as valuable resources.
This Global Recycling Day, Nespresso reaffirms its unwavering commitment to sustainability, urging South African coffee enthusiasts to participate actively in recycling efforts. By embracing Nespresso's recycling initiatives, consumers not only contribute to environmental preservation but also embark on a journey towards a more sustainable future.
