The Egyptian Mint Authority is working on a project to locally manufacture aluminium number plates for vehicles. The authority wants to use the locally made aluminium to manufacture the plates and to replace imported equivalents. This would also save hard currency for the country.
The Finance Ministry said in a statement on Sunday that the project will also help create new jobs for the country’s youth. After a meeting with chairman of the Mint Authority Abdel Raouf el Ahmedi, an advisor to the finance minister said that they have started lab-producing aluminium.

About 600 kilograms of aluminium have already been manufactured and tested at European factories to guarantee high quality. Sherif Hazem, the advisor to the finance minister said that the experiment was successful.
The Mint Authority is currently working on some technical points and once the project is commissioned, the products will not only be shipped to the domestic market but also be exported to the Gulf countries and Africa, he added.
An initial feasibility study of the plate project has been conducted, said Ahmedi. The study summarised the expected cost and expected revenues from the project.
Manufacturing those plates domestically is expected to help save between 25 to 30 per cent of expenses, Ahmedi concluded.
It is to be noted that the Egyptian government is focusing on adding value to the aluminium they produce at Egyptalum’s Nag Hammadi Aluminium Smelter.
