As reported by The European Aluminium Foil Association, in Germany 220 million Easter Bunnies have been produced for sale in the market for the holiday season in 2018 and the most of them are wrapped in aluminium foil for protection and shiny festive look. This year also million Easter bunnies wrapped in aluminium foil are waiting in the market for festive season customers. The number has increased 8% from 202 million in 2017. The primary export regions for Easter Bunnies are the European Union, the United States, Canada and Australia.
Chocolate Easter Bunnies outperformed their rival – the chocolate Santa Clause, production of which stood at 150 million in 2018. Both the Bunny and Santa are sold wrapped in a shiny aluminium foil printed in a variety of colours.
“Aluminium foil continues to be the packaging material of choice for many reasons,” explains Marika Knorr, Deputy Executive Director of the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA).
“Firstly, aluminium foil provides great barrier functions, offering complete protection from the light and other external influences that might be harmful to maintaining food quality. Secondly, the dead fold properties of aluminium foil allows it to be wrapped securely to the product, adhering to the contours of the shapes, where it remains until ready to be unwrapped by the consumer,” Knorr added.
She also highlighted the recycling advantage of the aluminium foil packaging of the Bunnies. The foil wrapper is scrunched and added to the recycling bin for its next life. She adds that in Germany, about 80% of all aluminium packaging is recycled. In Europe, she pointed out; there have been an increasing awareness about recycling and sustainability and aluminium foil is increasingly collected and recycled all over the continent.
European packaging companies have been producing printed wrapping foil for Easter Bunnies, Santa Clauses and other chocolate figures. Aluminium foils are produced industrially and then rolled for further processing as thin wrapping foils. Chocolate products in Europe and the USA have a long history of being sold wrapped in aluminium foils.
