The Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) recently inaugurated a cutting-edge steam boiler to enhance the factory's power generation operations. Valued at approximately $300,000, this new equipment is poised to ramp up the production of carbon anodes, a crucial component in the primary aluminium manufacturing process.
Function of the boiler
The steam boiler's primary function is to support the production of green anodes, an essential element of the aluminium smelting process. Noteworthy features include an economiser that enhances fuel efficiency and a dual-fuel burner compatible with Residual Fuel Oil (RFO) and natural gas. This dual-fuel capability is expected to facilitate a smooth transition towards increased natural gas usage.
During a ceremony held in Tema on March 8, VALCO CEO Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover expressed optimism about the new steam boiler's impact. Named in honour of the company's former CEO, Daniel Acheampong, Glover emphasised that the installation would significantly bolster the processing plant's efficiency and reliability.
Mr. Titus Glover highlighted
Mr Titus Glover highlighted that with the introduction of the new boiler, VALCO has increased its mixers from five to eight. Additionally, management has initiated measures to retrofit the additional two mixers, aiming to utilise 10 mixers in the aluminium smelting processes at the plant.
Addressing the need for the new steam boiler, Mr Titus Glover noted that the previous equipment had surpassed its peak efficiency by February 2023. The situation worsened when the tubes of the sole functioning boiler became damaged, leaving the smelter without any operational boiler.
Upon assuming the role of CEO of VALCO in August 2023, Mr Titus Glover mentioned that his predecessor, Mr Acheampong, along with the board, had already approved and made a 30 per cent payment for a new steam boiler. This proactive step paved the way for the timely installation of the essential equipment, ensuring the continuity and efficiency of VALCO's aluminium production operations.
About the new boiler
Mr. Titus Glover shared that the new boiler arrived at VALCO in December 2023, with installation completed by January 31, 2024. "So far, the facility has been running efficiently," he remarked. Furthermore, he mentioned that with the boiler's installation, plans had been set in motion to retrofit and modernise the plant. These efforts are geared towards boosting production from the current 50,000 tonnes of aluminium per annum to an impressive 300,000 tonnes of aluminium per annum.
Moreover, the smelter's transformation into a world-class facility is underway, focusing on creating employment opportunities for numerous Ghanaians. This strategic move enhances VALCO's operational capabilities and contributes to the local community's socioeconomic development.
Regina M. Odoom, the Director for Docks, Engineering, and Maintenance at VALCO, emphasised that the new boiler is not merely a piece of equipment but the lifeline for producing green anodes—a pivotal component in the smelter's production process. Mrs Odoom further noted that the maintenance team is actively working to bring the redundant boiler on board to support operations at the plant, showcasing VALCO's commitment to maximising resources and efficiency.
In addition, Dr. Henry Benya, the Board Chairman of VALCO, hailed the installation of the new boiler as a significant achievement. He highlighted that this milestone would significantly enhance the plant's efficient performance, ensuring a more sustainable and productive future for VALCO.
