The downstream aluminium industry was spotted with multiple affairs this week from October 16 to 20. While EOS launched its new Aluminum Al5X1 aluminium alloy, Novelis received a sum of $5 million from the Alabama Industrial Access Road and Bridge Corporation under ALDOT's administration for revamping the South Alabama Megasite. On the other hand, Aluminium Association of India (AAI) requested the government to provide rates for aluminium special economic zones and export oriented units (EOUs) under the RoDTEP scheme and thyssenkrupp Aerospace renewed aluminium components supply contract to the Boeing Company.

Downstream Recap: AAI asks for RoDTEP rates for aluminium SEZs and EOUs; thyssenkrupp renews aluminium supply contract with Boeing

Aluminium Association of India (AAI), an apex body representing the entire value chain of the Indian aluminium industry, has requested the government to provide rates for aluminium special economic zones and export oriented units (EOUs) under the RoDTEP scheme. The Association suggests that once the RoDTEP rates are declared for SEZs and EOUs, the country will start seeing improvements in the domestic industry and experience enhanced exports. Special economic zones (SEZs) and EOUs cumulatively represent the source of over 30 per cent of all aluminium exports from India. This indicates that a significant part of the domestic aluminium industry is yet to be covered by the RoDTEP scheme.

EOS announced the launch of its new Aluminum Al5X1 aluminium alloy. It was rumoured earlier this year that EOS would be releasing the high-strength alloy after showcasing sample parts at RAPID + TCT. The commercial availability of Al5X1 will begin in November for EOS M 290 users, followed by the EOS M 400-4 next year.

According to EOS, the Al5X1 3D printing material exhibits a 14% elongation with an ultimate tensile strength of 410 MPa. The material requires only a single-step heat treatment with no Hot Isostatic Pressing, resulting in quicker and more cost-effective part manufacturing. Additionally, parts printed in EOS Aluminum Al5X1 can be electropolished and anodised with no limits to potential colour choices for cosmetic and corrosion-resistant properties.
