Performance was mixed across sectors, as the industry continues a moderate recovery trend. The operating rate for primary aluminium alloys climbed 0.6 percentage points to 61.4 per cent, driven by improved order volume and year-end momentum from automakers to meet their annual targets, with a positive short-term outlook. The operating rate for aluminium wire and cable rose 0.4 percentage points to 64.8 per cent, supported by recovering photovoltaic demand and restored margins, although the sustainability of the upward trend remains to be seen. The operating rate for secondary aluminium rebounded 0.6 percentage points to 53.9 per cent, with...

Automakers turn to aluminum to cut weight out of cars, boost fuel economy

Automakers turn to aluminum to cut weight out of cars, boost fuel economy

Automakers plan to use more aluminum over the next few years to meet higher fuel economy requirements, a trend that could send car prices higher. "The amount of aluminum that's used in cars is projected to double by 2020," said Alcoa spokesman Kevin Lowery. Federal fuel economy standards call for automaker fleets to average 34 miles per gallon by 2016. Last year, the U.S. fleet got about 23 mpg. Automakers say hitting the new numbers means cutting a lot of weight out of cars. Less weight means less of a load for the engine to move, immediately improving fuel economy. Car companies further boost those efficiency improvements by using smaller, less powerful engines. "If you're really trying to maximize fuel economy, you really want to reduce horsepower as you cut weight," said Glenn Daehn,...

Aluminum Panels Set To Take On Pollution As 'Smog Eaters'

In the witch's brew of gases and particles that make up smog in most cities, nitrogen oxides are a plentiful ingredient. The pollutants also help create ground-level ozone, a nasty irritant for lungs, and bothersome fine particles. The family of chemicals, called NOx in shorthand, can inflame people's airways and trigger asthma attacks, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Reducing emissions is one way to curb NOx pollution. But aluminum giant Alcoa has another idea for taking on NOx: a building panel with an special coating, called EcoClean, that the company says can turn buildings into smog eaters. The secret weapon against smog? Titanium dioxide. Used to coat Alcoa's aluminum panels, the material can neutralize harmful pollutants through simple oxidation. When...

Alcoa Workers Welcome President With Pride

It was a proud day for the Quad Cities and especially for those who work at the Alcoa plant in Riverdale, Iowa. President Barack Obama shined the spotlight on what workers have accomplished during a visit to the plant Tuesday. He even thanked them for providing the aluminum in the wings of Air Force One. "So I want to thank all of you for getting me here in one piece. It was a pretty smooth ride, thanks to Alcoa," joked Obama. The president toured a section of the plant where he saw one of the milling machines used to make the material for airplane wings and where the company invested $90 million on other equipment upgrades. Then, he gave brief remarks to a group gathered around a stage inside the plant. "Good to be back in the Quads," he said. The last time Obama was in the Quad Cities...
