From raw resources to battery-ready materials: Australia's downstream ambitions take shape

Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

Germany-France aluminium FRP trade 2026 at $692m: Two-way exchange of coil, sheet, foil and high-value products

Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

Sapa buys $34M indirect press

Sapa Group has spent $34M on a 14” indirect press for rod and bar production at its Cressona, Pennsylvania, USA plant. Sapa is the only North American soft alloy extruder with indirect press technology. The new indirect press will increase production speed per unit by up to 50% . It will result in better grain structure and overall quality of product, and recover more scrap material than before, resulting in a lower operating cost to produce rod and bar. The indirect extrusion process allows for a more consistent grain structure and better dimensional tolerances, which improves the machinability and finishing of products. Along with the new indirect press, Sapa plans to add automatic packing and ageing to the process, enabling a fully integrated line for customers.

Significant aluminum growth forecast for vehicle production: ATG

Aluminum use in each vehicle in North America is expected to grow to 400 lbs in 2015 from 343 lbs in 2012, Brad Soultz, vice president and general manager of Novelis, said Monday at the Platts Aluminum Symposium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on behalf of the Aluminum Transportation Group. It is expected to increase to 550 lbs in 2025. Soultz said that these increases would be driven by the desire for fuel efficiency and new, stringent regulations. "Regulations are going to drive it and consumers require it," Soultz said of the expected rise in aluminum use. Aluminum is significantly lighter than other materials used in the production of vehicles and is therefore desirable for use in the production of vehicles. "Generally, lighter is always better," Soultz said. According to the ATG, 4.5...

Apple Chinese plant explosions caused by Al dust

Apple has confirmed that explosions last year at Chinese plants of two of its parts suppliers were caused by excessive aluminium dust. In its annual report on its suppliers’ efforts in worker safety, labour rights and environmental impact, Apple said the explosions at facilities operated by Hon Hai Precision Industry -- better known by its trade name, Foxconn -- and Pegatron last year were traced to small airborne particles. The Foxconn plant explosion in May 2011 in Chengdu, China, killed four and injured 18 others. A December explosion at a Shanghai factory run by RiTeng Computer Accessory, a subsidiary of Pegatron, injured 59, Apple said. Other reports had put the injured tally at the latter explosion at 61. According to the Apple report, both explosions involved combustible aluminium...

US sheet maker Novelis sees strong long-term aluminum outlook

US aluminum sheet maker Novelis is looking to a strong long-term outlook in the aluminum market, with automotive up almost 25%, specialty products up 6% and 4-5% in beverage can through 2015, said Nick Madden, senior vice president and chief procurement officer. Speaking at the Platts Aluminum Symposium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Monday, he said he saw structural global flat-rolled product demand growth of 6% or more from 2011-2015, largely driven by Asia, South America and the Middle East. That would add 6.5 million mt to flat-rolled product demand in the next few years. "Even if the growth then slows to more traditional 4%, the market will be 30 million mt by the end of the decade," Madden said. Madden noted that Novelis' current metal balance is one-third slab, one-third prime and...

LME CEO: Detroit Warehouse Queues Won't Vanish Overnight

Queues to take aluminum out of warehouses in Detroit won't vanish overnight once a requirement kicks in for a unit of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) to increase deliveries, the chief executive of the London Metal Exchange said Thursday. Martin Abbott said delays in taking metal out of Detroit facilities aren't being caused by the LME, warehousing firms or consumers in the first place. "Anyone who thinks the new load-out rate will make queues go away is gravely mistaken," he said. "We as an exchange didn't create the queues. The warehousers didn't create the queues. "What has created the queues is a surplus of material and a surplus of cheap- to-free money," he said. "Until that changes, we aren't going to see a reduction or a disappearance of queues at the warehouses." From April,...

Norsk Hydro ASA is considering curtailing production at its Kurri Kurri aluminium plant in Australia. A consultation process has started with the local employees. We will continue to stay in close dialog with all affected stakeholders, including employees, unions and the local community throughout this process," says Hilde Merete Aasheim, executive vice president of Hydro's Primary Metal business area. This is a response to the weak macro-economic environment, with low metal prices and uncertain market outlook. In addition, Kurri Kurri is suffering from a strong Australian dollar relative to the US dollar. In case of a curtailment at Kurri Kurri, Hydro is confident that customer...
