At least 146 employees of a Newton County aluminum extrusion plant will lose their jobs this summer when the facility is closed. The Bonnell Aluminum factory at Kentland, northwest of Lafayette, has been operating at a loss for several years, according to a statement from the parent Tredegar Corp. based in Richmond, Va. The company filed a lay-off warning letter with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, which was posted on the state agency’s website. The notice, which refers to the company as Bon L Manufacturing, indicates the “permanent lay-offs should begin no earlier than April 3, and that the facility will be closed about Sept. 1.” Some of the employees are represented by the United Steelworkers Union, District 7. Qatar Industrial Manufacturing Company (QIMC) has said its subsidiary Qatar Aluminium Extrusion will start commercial production of extruded profile by the end the first quarter and the four-fold capacity expansion in its Qatar Acids Company is expected by early next year. “The plant of Qatar Aluminium Extrusion Company has been commissioned and it is expected to start commercial production of extruded profiles with a capacity of 8,000 tonnes per year during the first quarter of 2012,” QIMC chief executive Abdulrahman Abdullah al-Ansari said. An Austin, Texas, investment group has bought Southeastern Aluminum Products Inc.’s Jacksonville building and leased it back to the company. AIC Ventures paid $9 million for the 197,000-square-foot industrial building at 4925 Bulls Bay Highway, according to public records. Southeastern Aluminum Products, which manufactures bath and shower doors, entered a long-term lease on the building with AIC after the transaction closed, AIC said in a news release. Terms of the lease were not disclosed. China Zhongwang Holdings Ltd, the world's second-largest manufacturer of aluminum extrusion products by volume, has set a goal of increasing the volume of its exports to the United States by fivefold in 2012, indicating the company's ambition to strengthen its overseas business. The company will sell up to 50,000 tons of aluminum products overseas this year, mainly to the US, said Chief Financial Officer Vincent Cheung when he spoke to reporters in the city of Liaoyang on Saturday. Hydro's aluminium tubing plant in Denmark and the Turkish company Konveyör have signed a cooperation agreement designed to support customers and make easier their replacement of copper tubing with aluminium in heating, ventilation, refrigeration and air conditioning applications. TREND: The shift from copper to aluminium is increasing in the air conditioning and refrigeration fields, partly due to the substantial price difference between the metals. The idea behind the agreement is to help customers in their move from copper to aluminium in their heat transfer applications. At the order of the Washington state Department of Ecology, Kaiser Aluminum Corp. recently completed a draft document outlining options to remove contaminants found in the soil and groundwater at its Trentwood aluminum rolling mill in Spokane Valley. The removal of those contaminants, which have been identified at five different sites within the facility, could cost up to $18 million, says Bud Leber, environmental manager at Trentwood.

The initial part of the campaign known as "Jobs From Autos" is led by a production manager, Matthew Holbrook from the St.Augustine, Florida-based Hydro plant.
