Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

Two aluminium buyers in Japan have agreed second-quarter premiums to be paid to producers of $115 per tonne, slightly higher than for the current quarter, while most other Japanese firms are still negotiating for lower premiums, two sources directly involved in the matter said. The agreed figure is sharply below Rio Tinto Alcan's initial request for $132, and suggests there is not yet a recovery in Japanese demand that Australian and U.S. aluminium producers have been hoping for to drive a rise in the premium. Aluminium spot market premiums were rising both in Europe and the United States at the start of the year, underpinned by a healthy demand outlook and smelter shutdowns. Three-month futures price on the London Metal Exchange have risen more than 15 percent this year. The two Japanese...

Hydro, a global supplier of aluminium, has been a major supplier of aluminium body sheet for the Bluecar production in Paris. Pininfarina, an Italian car design firm, and Bolloré, a French investment and industrial holding group, have launched Bluecar, an electric vehicle, at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. Hydro has manufactured and supplied the sheets from its rolled products facility in Grevenbroich, Germany. In 2011, approximately 3,000 Bluecar vehicles included side wall panels produced using Hydro’s aluminium . The entire Bluecar fleet is mobilizing Autolib, the new car-sharing scheme, which was introduced in December 2011. Bolloré have placed an additional order to Hydro for 200 metric tons of rolled aluminium, which will be used to build the second generation Bluecar electric vehicles...

Aluminum hit its highest price on the London Metal Exchange in more than five months, profiting from a recovery and growing demand in key consumer countries, said Commerzbank in a research note. “The Japan Aluminum Association, for instance, believes that demand in the country has already seen its lowest point and is now likely to climb again following eight months of continuous decline,” Commerzbank added. “This view is backed up by the fact that Japanese consumers will once again be paying higher premiums for aluminum from April, for the first time in three quarters. The premium on the LME price reflects the regional supply/demand situation and covers freight and insurance costs. The country is recovering from the natural disasters it suffered last year--this is confirmed by the growth...

The Azerbaijani government has unveiled plans to stop importing finished products from aluminum. "So why do we continue importing products made of aluminum? Because only part of the work has been done. To develop manufacture of finished products from aluminum it is needed to create a technology park to operate under the Ganja aluminum plant. I appeal the Ministry of Economic Development to involve the private sector in creation of such a technology park to enhance the level of processing of aluminum in the country," Aliyev said. Azerbaijan has two aluminum plants - in Sumgait and Ganja, and its own raw material base (alunite). President Ilham Aliyev has claimed that a new aluminum plant opened in Ganja manufactures 50,000 tons of high quality aluminum per year and is able to produce...

Japan's 69 rolling aluminum mills shipped a total 156,455 mt of sheets and extrusions in January, in line with the 156,643 mt shipped in the same month a year earlier, Japan Aluminum Association data showed Tuesday. Sheet shipments fell 8.2% year on year to 84,732 mt in January, but this was offset by extrusion shipments rising 11.5% over the same period to 71,721 mt, the data showed. Sheet shipments were impacted by heavy snow and low temperatures that slowed beverage canstock demand, as well as a general decline in Japanese exports on the back of global economic uncertainty, the association said. January canstock shipments totaled 27,364 mt in January, down 1.8% year on year, and sheet exports 13,232 mt, down 14.7% over the same period. Extrusion shipments were supported by new housing...

The Pininfarina Bluecar, a product of the car design factory Pininfarina in collaboration with the French industry group Bolloré, was introduced at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. It's no longer a concept: In 2011, about 3,000 cars were produced. 3,000 Bluecars drive around the capital of France, with visible aluminium from Hydro as side panels. All have deep-drawn side wall panels made of aluminium body sheet, developed and delivered from Hydro's rolled products plant in Grevenbroich, Germany. You can't buy the car, though. Not yet. The entire fleet is mobilizing the new Parisian car-sharing system Autolib, which was launched in December 2011. The program is based on Vélolib, the bicycle-sharing system in Paris that has 20,000 bikes ready to rent and ride at more than 1,200 stations across...
