Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

Motor Wheel Service has expanded its xlite range with the launch of xflange, a new forged aluminium wheel designed for heavy duty applications. The wheels, which are available in 17.5, 19.5 and 22.5 inch sizes, are manufactured using a special process which embeds hard material into the flange and provides enormous strength to the section of the wheel that faces extreme pressure under increased loads. xflange benefits includes a longer life cycle, higher wear resistance and an excellent bonding with the wheel substrate. The ultimate advantages of operating with forged aluminium wheels includes extra payloads, reduced fuel usage and decreased CO² emissions. John Ellis, managing director of Motor Wheel Service, said: "We continually look to enhance our range and the xflange is a welcome...

Alcoa Wheel and Transportation Products (AWTP), an Alcoa business unit, introduced four new forged aluminum wheels, two of which offer maximum loads per wheel currently unavailable in steel. The Alcoa wheels are up to 44% lighter than steel equivalents and support the move to higher-load-capacity tires. Alcoa introduced the new wheels at the 64th International Motor Show (IAA) Commercial Vehicles conference in Hannover, Germany. “We are constantly driving ourselves to design aluminum wheels that offer our customers stronger and lighter options to steel that also increase cargo capacity, fuel economy and reduce carbon emissions,” said Alcoa Wheel and Transportation Products President, Tim Myers. “There is a definite trend within the commercial vehicle industry to move to...

The European Union added new anti-dumping duties against Chinese producers of aluminium foil on Tuesday, adding penalties against low weight rolls used for consumer food storage. The bloc imposed duties ranging from 13 to 35.4 percent on aluminium foil rolls from China not exceeding 10 kg, to "prevent further injury being caused to the Union industry," it said in its official legal journal. After a 2009 anti-dumping investigation, the European Union imposed posted levies on jumbo rolls of aluminium foil by Chinese producers. The recent move came in response to a commercial dumping complaint made by the European Association of Metals (Eurometaux) on behalf of over 30 European foil producers last year. "We are welcoming this measure," said Elena Vyboldina, trade and economy manager at...

In a recent release from the Office of Washington Lieutenant Governor, Brad Owens, James Palmer, an economic development manager of the Washington State Department of Commerce is quoted as saying, “Think of composites as the new aluminum.” The aluminum industry begs to differ. Aluminum has been the go-to material for aerospace applications for more than 100 years including the crafts the went to the moon, heralded victory in World War II and now are used to transverse the global in mere hours. Daily, the industry is involved in developing new innovations that maintain aluminum as the material of choice for aerospace engineers, designers and manufacturers. “Aluminum has been used in aviation since the birth of the industry, I don’t see it being replaced by composites any time soon,” said...

Although some engineers have had success in spot welding steel and aluminum together, it has largely been considered impossible to achieve reliable, continuous welds directly between the two dissimilar metals. That changed last Thursday, however, when Honda Motor Company announced that it has devised a technique for doing that very thing. The results, which include lower vehicle weight and better performance, can be seen in the 2013 Accord. The Honda team developed a variation on Friction Stir Welding, in which metals are joined via mechanical pressure – it's the same technique that has been used for experimental steel/aluminum spot welds in the past. As Honda explains it, “This technology generates a new and stable metallic bonding between steel and aluminum by moving a rotating tool on...

Japanese producers of aluminum extrusion for automotive components were seeking buyers in overseas markets so that they will be able to maintain their output levels, mill sources said Friday. In July, production hit a high last seen in October 2008. Japan's 69 rolling plants produced 12,536 mt of aluminum extrusions for the auto sector in that month. The high output was attributed to the Japanese government's subsidy program to promote sales of fuel-efficient cars, according to Japan Aluminium Association. Japanese rolling mills fear that their output would have to drop after the subsidy program ends possibly this month, the sources said. Toyota Motor told its component suppliers last month that Japan's October passenger car output may possibly fall by 20%, component suppliers said. With...
