Following the agreement between Norsk Hydro ASA and Orkla ASA to combine their respective aluminium extrusion businesses, the European Commission has expressed preliminary concerns regarding the possible competitive effects of the intended merger in certain markets. The concerns relate to multi-port extrusions in Europe and soft-alloy extrusions in the Nordic region, in this context defined as Norway and Sweden. In response to the concerns expressed by the European Commission, Orkla and Hydro propose, if required, to divest Sapa's MPE business at Harderwijk in the Netherlands and Hydro's extrusion plant at Raufoss in Norway, including Hydro's affiliated fabrication plant in Vetlanda, Sweden. The European Commission's initial review period will be extended until 14 May 2013. Provided that...

Henkel Corporation's automotive group today announced the North American production debut of its BONDERITE Flex Process on the 2013 Ford F-150. The Flex Process, used on the body of the 2013 F-150, enables a significant increase in aluminum content on vehicles by replacing the traditional zinc phosphating process with a zirconium oxide pretreatment. The 2013 F-150 features an all-aluminum hood. Once aluminum content on vehicles reaches approximately 30 percent, the use of zinc phosphate becomes more difficult to control and leads to an increase in sludge generation. Zirconium oxide offers a solution to the limitations zinc phosphate presents. "Treating aluminum with zirconium oxide gives vehicle manufacturers the flexibility of processing up to 85 percent aluminum on vehicles, versus 25...

A new study released today shows that an all-aluminum vehicle can shed more than 40 percent body mass, boosting fuel economy by 18 percent when combined with secondary mass savings and other design changes. The study helps explain why car and truck makers are shifting away from steel to aluminum, and supports projections that aluminum-intensive vehicles will become more common in the marketplace with continued demand for more fuel efficient vehicles. The research, conducted by EDAG Group and commissioned by the Aluminum in Transportation Group of the U.S. Aluminum Association, was presented today at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) World Congress during a panel discussion on advances in lower weight materials. It comes at a time when automotive aluminum use is at an all-time...

Nokia showed off its codename ‘Catwalk’ Lumia device at MWC 2013, which has supposedly been fashioned out of aluminium, to a select few at an invite only briefing. Alcoa expects to more than triple its sales of aluminium sheet to automakers by 2015 as they reduce car weight by substituting it for steel in car bodies, an Alcoa executive said. Revenue from auto sheet - mainly used in car bodies - is expected to surge to $580 million by 2015 from $160 million last year, Randall Scheps, global automotive marketing director, said in a telephone interview. "It is moving from the very expensive, luxury vehicles into the mass market vehicles. That's what so exciting about what's going to happen in the next two or three years," Scheps said. Car makers are being forced to cut weights of cars to meet tough emission standards. Aluminium is a third of the weight of conventional steel but more expensive. The steel and aluminium industries are in a high stakes...
