Palmer Foundry launches highly ductile aluminum alloy and receives ISO 9001:2008

Palmer Foundry, the leader in providing dimensionally stable and vacuum tight aluminum castings for complex applications, has just announced the launch of a new highly ductile aluminum alloy called HyDuct5 and also that the company has been awarded ISO 9001:2008 certification for the manufacture and sale of aluminum castings. This new alloy is perfect for applications where high ductility is required. Compared to the widely known 356-T6 and 356-T51 alloys, HyDuct5 has a higher ultimate tensile strength of 35,000 versus 33,000 and 25,000 respectively; and an elongation value of 9% versus 3% and 2% respectively. HyDuct5 is added to Palmer Foundry’s suite of specially developed alloys which also includes the proprietary Vapore 6 and Stable-Cast series. “An important part of our business...

Aluminum shipments by Japan decline at slower pace in March

Shipments of rolled-aluminum products by Japanese fabricators to domestic and overseas markets decreased at a slower pace in March, supported by demand from beverage-can makers, according to an industry group. Volume fell 1.5 percent to 171,163 metric tons last month from a year earlier, the Japan Aluminium Association said in a report today. The pace of decline slowed from February’s 8.2 percent rate. The decrease was led by the auto sector as vehicle sales in Japan declined 11.3 percent in March because of an end to subsidy payments by the government to buyers of fuel-efficient models. The weakness was partially offset by 4.9 percent growth in demand for flat-rolled products from beverage-can makers. The association expects shipments for the year through March will expand 3.2 percent to...

Honda finds solution that enables steel and aluminium to be joined

Japanese car manufacturer Honda Motor Company has announced that it has developed a technology that allows steel and aluminium to be joined. Honda says the innovation will allow it to manufacture weight-saving vehicle doors that combine a steel structure with an aluminium outer skin. Joining together dissimilar metals may sound simple, notes the company, but requires a combination of no fewer than three separate new technologies to enable the production of doors with aluminium outer panels. These include, firstly, a proprietary ‘3D Lock Seam structure’, which involves mechanically joining steel and aluminium panels through twice-over layering and hemming. In addition, Honda had to use a highly anticorrosive steel for the inner panel, while developing a different panel shape that would...

Jaguar's small saloon styling to be 'off-centre' of class standard

The Jaguar BMW 3-series rival will be styled to be “off-centre” of the class standard, according to design boss Ian Callum, but he has conceded that entering such a well-established segment of the car market makes his job of producing a car, that stands out from the crowd particularly, difficult. The baby Jaguar is expected to be launched in 2016 and be based on Jaguar Land Rover’s Premium Lightweight Architecture, a platform that would also underpin the next generation Jaguar XF and XJ. The combination of smaller turbocharged engines and aluminium body construction is said to be key to the Jaguar establishing a unique selling point as a low emission but fun-to-drive car. “It is part of Jaguar’s core values to be slightly off-centre wherever it goes,” said Callum. “But at the same time...

Encore to slowly ramp up aluminum wire production

Copper wire producer Encore Wire Corp. will slowly ramp up aluminum wire production at its new plant in McKinney, Texas, this year. Staying competitive in this industry will be challenging as competitors are willing to cut prices in order to keep customers, Encore said. "We are trying to be really careful with how we go to market with that product," Encore president and chief executive officer Daniel Jones said of aluminum wire. "The first line of defense of our competitors is price. They will cut the price to protect an order or a customer. That is just not our style." The McKinney-based company started aluminum wire production in the fourth quarter, and expects the final equipment to be installed in the second quarter of 2013. "From a timing standpoint, it is going to be a gradual ramp...

Volvo applies Formula One technology in next-gen XC90

Volvo realizes it can’t continue on the same path forever. Now 11 years old, the XC90 is one of the oldest production cars on sale today, according to an Autocar report. Accordingly, Volvo engineers are hard at work on a new Scalable Product Architecture platform, which it claims is “flexible and scalable,” allowing for multiple derivations. The new platform, which will be 90-percent new, incorporates an aluminum front structure, including doors and drivetrain components. The use of lightweight aluminum should shave around 200-350 pounds off the present vehicle. From there, Volvo will do away with its five, six, and eight-cylinder variants and sell only its new four-cylinder engines based upon its Volvo Engine Architecture or “VEA.” These frugal fours will be mated with hybrid technology...

Showa Denko KK develops aluminum reflector for liquid crystal displays

Showa Denko K.K. has developed high-performance aluminum reflector for crystal liquid displays for use in personal computers and television sets. Sample shipments started last month. This product is an extension of SDKs ST-60 aluminum alloy with high thermal diffusivity comparable to that of pure aluminum, which is used increasingly as heat sinks for plasma displays and LCDs. Specifically, the newly developed reflector is manufactured by providing proprietary white coating on ST-60 sheet. Compared with conventional product (aluminum alloy to which white film of polyethylene terephthalate is attached), the newly developed reflector offers higher heat dissipation efficiency and light resistance, as well as reflectivity of more than 95%. As the current trends in LCDs are toward larger...
