A new “aluminum-air” battery developed by Israel-based Phinergy and Alcoa Canada can more than triple the distance electric cars can travel. The battery, shown to the public in Montreal this week, is made of panels that are mostly made of aluminum. By using the new battery on an "ordinary car" along with a car’s normal lithium-ion battery, the car can travel as far as 1000 miles. Aviv Tzidon, CEO of Phinergy, told CBC Montreal’s Homerun, "We hope that this will increase the penetration of electric cars with zero emissions," and added that the new battery should ease electric car drivers’ "range anxiety." He said, "When you're buying a car, you want to buy freedom. When you have a car which is limited in range, and you need to have infrastructure to [fast-charge it], you are losing this...

Leading figures from the British automotive industry will discuss the growing demand for aluminium amongst carmakers at a special conference in Birmingham this autumn. Until recently, aluminium has only been used in mechanical components in cars, with all-aluminium vehicle bodies being the preserve of high end or specialist vehicles. That’s changing as mass-market models begin to utilise the recyclable material in chassis and bodies. The two-day event, which is being organised by ALFED, takes place on November 11 and 12 at the Thinktank Science Museum in Birmingham. The conference will build on last year’s successful gathering with more than 100 delegates due to attend each day from companies including Jaguar Land Rover, Morgan and Toyota. Interestingly, this year’s event will see Lotus...

Luxury manufacturers such as BMW and Jaguar make extensive use of materials such as carbon fibre and aluminium in the structure of some new cars such as the i8 supercar and upcoming XE sedan. More affordable models, such as the Holden Commodore, have introduced some alumiunium panels to save weight but the car's core structure is usually made from heavier steel. Matt Zaluzec, Ford’s technical leader for materials and manufacturing research, says the lightweight Fusion is just as safe and reliable as its conventional cousin. “Our goal was to investigate how to design and build a mixed-materials, lightweight vehicle that could potentially be produced in high volume, while providing the same level of safety, durability and toughness as our vehicles on the road today,” he says. “The...

As of late 2013, the capacity of aluminum foil in China, as the world´s largest producer of aluminum sheets, strips and foils, hit 3.4 million tons/a; the capacity of aluminum cold rolling sheet/strip and aluminum hot rolling strip both reached 12.5 million tons/a. In particular, "1+4" hot continuous rolling played a large part of hot rolling strip production line, making up 43.6% of the total hot rolling capacity. China also boasts the largest net exporter of aluminum rolling products in the world. In 2013, China´s net export of aluminum sheet/strip and aluminum foil realized 1.214 million tons and 699,000 tons. Due to technical shortcomings, most of China´s imports are high-precision aluminum sheet/strip products. Driven by robust demand from downstream sectors like automobile,...

A new aluminum wheel coating from Accuride Corp. is designed to reduce the rim flange wear seen in heavy-haul, shifting-load and frequent stop-start applications. The Accu-Flange coating, which can be applied to many of the company’s aluminum wheels, is a special protective treatment applied to the surfaces of the wheel flange most prone to wear. The treatment bonds to the aluminum substrate, forming a tough barrier that reduces abrasion between the tire wall and wheel rim, Accuride explained. As a result, Accu-Flange extends wheel service life for fleets that carry heavy loads and loads that are prone to shifting, such as lumber, metals, gravel, liquids and even passengers. It also is ideal for fleets that make frequent stops and starts – such as transit or refuse applications – and for...
