The energy-intensive process of producing virgin aluminium, especially during smelting, highlights the critical need for lower-carbon solutions. DECO has become the first building company to adopt Capral Aluminium’s LocAl® Green lower-carbon aluminium across its entire Capral supply, setting a strong example for the industry.

“Growing environmental pressures, increased regulatory scrutiny and the rising demand from consumers and stakeholders for responsible sourcing are all key factors,” stated Richard Hamber, General Manager at DECO Australia.

A key milestone in DECO’s sustainability journey has been achieving product membership with the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). This global non-profit brings together producers, users, and stakeholders across the entire aluminium value chain.

For DECO, aligning with an initiative that upholds strict standards for both chain of custody and product performance ensures that all LocAL® Green aluminium products they source are fully traceable and backed by verified claims. However, their ASI Associate Membership goes well beyond material traceability—it represents a broader commitment to high environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. This includes addressing the full lifecycle impact of their products and maintaining a strong focus on ethical and responsible material sourcing.

It’s one of the construction industry’s most versatile and durable building materials. However, aluminium has a complex and intensive production process, including mining, refining and smelting. Ensuring sustainability throughout the supply chain helps companies like ours mitigate associated environmental and social risks from the production process, foster long-term resilience – and align with global sustainability goals such as carbon reduction and circular economy principles,” added Richard.

Sustainability has been a foundational principle for DECO since day one. As a family-owned and operated business, DECO is guided by values rooted in its people and community, enabling a long-term, purpose-driven approach that sets it apart from larger corporations.

This commitment is reflected across every aspect of their operations, from developing recyclable product lines and redesigning products to reduce waste to transitioning their fleet to hybrid vehicles ahead of the curve. Beyond environmental efforts, DECO also champions human rights and climate action, underscoring a broader, more holistic vision of sustainability, one the company takes great pride in.

“Our dedication to running our business sustainably only grows. As we invest further into our business, we are able to quickly and efficiently make conscious decisions to invest in sustainable options and practices, highlighting to our team, stakeholders and customers our commitment to sustainable practices – and hopefully inspiring them to make more sustainable choices along the way too,” concluded Richard.
