The CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST), situated in Kerala, will work with Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL), Bengaluru, to indigenise the country's aerospace and military industries. In this respect, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in Bengaluru on November 2, 2023.
The MoU calls for creating aeronautical quality aluminium alloy casting and magnesium utilising the low-pressure casting (LPC) technology, as well as filler materials for salvage welding of aluminium and magnesium alloy castings and other research fields. It will make it easier for CSIR and NIIST to cooperate on human resource utilisation, facility optimisation, technological support services, consulting services, and collaborative research in light alloys, as well as the design and development of aircraft components and welding.
The National Institute of Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST) in Trivandrum is a CSIR laboratory dedicated to cutting-edge research and development on issues of critical national concern, such as the efficient use of local resources.
"The MoU facilitates CSIR-NIIST to collaborate on human resource utilisation, facility utilisation, technology support services, consultancy services and collaborative research works in the field of light alloys, for the design and development of aerospace components and welding. The specific areas of collaboration include manufacturing of aeronautical grade magnesium alloy castings using low pressure casting (LPC) process, design and development of filler materials for salvage welding of aluminium and magnesium alloy castings and other areas of research of mutual interest," highlights the MoU.
