Corrugated aluminium sheets will be vital in constructing the Russian Brest reactor's cooling tower

EDITED BY : 2MINS READ

During the construction of the Brest-OD-300 nuclear reactor at the Siberian Chemical Combine in Seversk, the first level of an evaporative cooling tower has been installed by Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation. The Proryv (Breakthrough) project is building a pilot demonstration power complex (ODEK) to demonstrate the power of nuclear energy.

TVEL, Rosatom's fuel company, has completed the installation of metal structures for the first tier of the Brest reactor's evaporative cooling tower.

A cooling tower that stands 80 metres tall and measures 79.5 metres in diameter at the base will be constructed using about 1,000 tons of metal structures. Installed on the foundation, the lower tier is being painted with an anti-corrosion coating. Corrugated aluminium sheets will then be layered over the metal structures. A fully machined, painted, and aluminium-clad second-tier mounting mark will be installed for the cooling tower.

An irrigation area of 4000 square meters is cooled by the cooling tower using a direct flow of atmospheric air. The water is supplied to the turbine hall after cooling and cleaning by circulating pumps. It is planned to complete the construction and installation of the cooling tower by September 2023 and commission it by June 2025.

Report on Future of Aluminium Transportaion sector

SCC has implemented the Proryv project since 2011 to demonstrate closed fuel cycle technology. There will be three unique facilities at ODEK: a module for reprocessing and recycling irradiated fuel, a 300 MWe Brest-300 lead-cooled fast reactor, and a module for reprocessing and recycling uranium-plutonium nuclear fuel.
