The City of York Council, in collaboration with Alupro, had organised a Christmas competition for York's primary school students to celebrate recent changes which allowed the council to collect aluminium foil from households in their kerbside collections. Primary school students in York were tasked with creating A4 posters with Christmas-themed artwork using old and cleaned aluminium foil and whatever other materials they might find.
More than 100 kids participated in the competition by submitting unique foil posters with a Christmas theme. Esme from Osbaldwick Primary Academy took first prize, followed by Bluebelle from Poppleton Ousebank Primary School in second and Taylor from Stockton-on-the Forest Primary School in third.
The executive member for climate change, Councillor Paula Widdowson, gave the winning entry author her prize. Although their school received £500 in gift certificates for eco-friendly educational supplies, the youngster received a £50 coupon.
"Thank you to all the children who took part in the foil poster competition, we really enjoyed looking at all of the fantastic entries. The aim of the competition was to engage with the children with a fun activity, whilst they learnt about the importance of aluminium foil recycling," said Tom Giddings, executive director at Alupro.
Up until now, the city's aluminium foil recycling programme has been supported by the non-profit Snappy, but this service is coming to an end, and the council has set up preparations to collect the foil. Also, this has allowed council members to examine and raise the limits on the goods they will accept at the curb, making it more straightforward for locals to recycle even more.
"I’d like to thank all the students who took part in the competition, sharing their posters and learning more about recycling. Our long-term vision is to create a cleaner, greener city and this competition to raise awareness of what can be recycled at the kerbside is the latest step in our work to expand and improve recycling and waste services across York,” said Widdowson .
